THE FILM TAX.

The Acting Prime Minister should be congrafulated on his clear and forcible reply to the protests that have been recorded, chiefly by interested parties, against the px-oposed film lax. Mr. Ransom quotes the Minister of Internal Affairs to show that the tax in 2\ew Zealand, in regard to the proportion of payments to rentals received, will be approximately equivalent to the tax on imported films now being paid in Australia, and that the position of the taxpayers is in certain important respects better and not worse than it was in the days of "silent" films. Moreover, the British film producers have not talked about boycotting the country, but have assured the Government that they are prepared to "carry on" and wait for better times. In conclusion, Mr. Ransom, referring to the threats of certain American picture organisations to bring pressure to bear upon the authorities, has stated that "the Government will not tolerate interference in the domestic affairs of the Dominion on the part of any foreign corporations." The Acting Prime Minister deserves credit for the stand that he has made, and we have no doubt that he can depend in this matter on the support of Parliament and of the whole c-ountrv.
