HOVERD SHIELD MATCH.

The first match of the series of games required to decide 'who should hold the Hoverd Shield for 1930 was played at Devonport on Tuesday evening. This trophv is for competition between the three Foresters' Courts of the North Shore and each match is between three full rinks, on the "home and home" principle. Court Birkenhead were victorious over Court Victoria (Devonport) by two games to one. Results (Birkenhead names first) : Logie, Wrightson, Simpson. Blackwell 15, v„ Veart, Pitts, Hamblin, Cliffe-.ll; Hoyland, Adam.", Beckman, Samson 36, v. Hoverd," Spinley. Scotland, Sullivan 11; Davenport. Swindail, Harkin. Swanson o, v. A. Williams, Sharp, J". Williams, Knaggs 19. In the event of a second.tie between the courts, the shield will go to the one with the highest aggregate of points. On account of Knagg's hollow victory over Swanson, Victoria secured a margin of 6 points, although going down on the score of games.

TAKAPUNA SHIELD,

Competition for this trophy is confined to players who have not played skip or third in any Hoverd Shield match of the current season. In the first match between Victoria and Birkenhead, both teams were level, 13 each, at the 14th head. On the final head Gasson drew a "toucher" on the edge of the mat, with his first bowl, and from its position it was next to impossible for the opposing team to do anything with it. Victoria thus won the first leg by one point. Results were:— Devonport.—Fnlljames, Kitson, Gasson, Hinton 14. '

Birkenhead. — Kerry, Skinner, Grant, Huddlestone 13. Next week two further senes -of games in both shield contests -win be played. On Monday, Birkenhead will play Takapuna, at Birkenhead. The matches between Takapuna and Victoria are set down for decision at Tak&pnna on Tnesday.
