AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL TITLE.

A large audience witnessed -the finalsession of the last game of the Auckland Provincial amateur billiard championship for the Billiards, Limited Shield, at Messrs. Billiards, Limited's showrooms last night, when W. E. Hackett finally defeated H. A. Massey by 358 points in 3000 up. Scores at the previous sessions were: t W. E. Ilackett, 500, in play; 11. A. Massey, 292.

Ilackctt failed to finish his break of 15, but in his next visit to the table compiled a heat all-round break of 55. He might have added to this, but he , unfortunately played with the wrong ball. Soon after, he, completed another good one of 00, which increased his lead to more than 300 points.

Though Massey made a break of 22, Ilackett at once retaliated with a 29. Massey replied with a 35, and then Hackett with a 21, which made the score 723 to 353 in the latter's favour. Hackett further increased his lead with an excellent run of 57. Massey made a fine determined rally and registered a 50, which he followed up with a 37. Ilackett kept forcing the game, and completed a break of 52, mostly made by top of the table play. Hackett had a commanding lead at this stage, the scores being SB3 to 531. i Each recorded a 20 break soon after. Hackett., however, had no difficulty in maintaining his lead.. The players received an ovation at the conclusion. The final scores were: W. E. Hackett, 1000, breaks of 55, GO, 29, 21, 37, 52 and 20, average for two sessions 10;-II. A. Massey, 642, breaks of 22, 35, 50, 38 and 20. On behalf of Messrs. Billiards, Limited Mr. Cummins congratulated the players on their excellent displays, and presented Mr. Ilackett with the Billiards, Limited Shield, which he will hold for one year, also a gold medal to commemorate his victory. Mr. Massey received the set of balls used in the games as' the prize for being runner-up. Tie also received a special'trophy for recording the highest break, 74, made during the tournament.
