A young trotter by The Iriumph SylVie; has gone : Into. T. Grimmond's team'' t,o-be educated. Lee is'working a team of seven, the! majority are novices, but P.arri?h BcHo and Nelson Dillon will be on, hand early to race. * . , '• _• - , .. "The latest addition.to; L. McMahonV team is a four-year-old by? The Triumph out ,of . a McKinney . mare. -. The .novice wants a lot" of building and, at presents very ,:raw.\' - .* ( r.' -Smith' yesterday received, ah addition ■ to' his charges when the gelding Blue''Danube, -by Blue Mountain King, was given him to prepare; Blue- Danube is. owned ;by Mr. F. Herring," who raced Concertina at the relief meeting. ''Hohoro ia now being trained by his ownfer." The bay 'gelding, has a fair turn* of speed, but somehow/he. does not win. a race, and' he looks anything but a good proposition. J. O'Kane has been driving him in his; work lately.' V^' J. Shaw is working, a team of five-and all but one, the Elorrie Bingen filly, have raced; Warplane, Stonev, Arachne, and Roland- are all going along satisfactorily and no doubt will be entered for the Waikato meeting. , The Worthy Bond—Florrie Bingen filly in J. Shaw's team is now going. at the pacing : gait/, : When first put, into, .work she ' a but apparently her trainer feels- that she; will make good sooner with . the hopples on as she, handles. the straps' well. The Rey de Oro mare Benefice is to be taken in hand again this'week and prepared for approaching fixtures. The bay mare was a iiseful pacer last season, and with her speed should always be able to get' enough to pay expenses. She has gone a mile and a quarter in 2.48 3-5 and a mile and a half in 3.24 3-5. .The Ipss of Antonia Direct, who diedon was a sever© one to P., Smith, as the English-bred horse was just beginning to show speed in his work and lie promised to get money early. The Epsom traiher is in hopes of getting another horse out from England, but lie ! had a - very high' opinion • of • Antonia i Direct,'., and expected him to go a mile in 2.10 before the presont season was out.. };■; . '' ; ' '•' ■ /' Etta Cole has put in an appearance on the track again after a' fairly good spell. The chestnut mare is again to be prepared for racing' by A: Julian, who is particularly successful with squaregaited horses. Etta Cole at one time ; threatened -to reach the ' very highest company, but she never showed anything like the speed in her races that she did in training. •>-. , Native King, whose; name has, been kept well before the public tliie season on account' "of the brilliant perfo'rmances of his son, Native Prince,, is likely to do a big season at the stud, and amongst the mares that will visit him are three of the best in New Zealand, in Onyz, 3.13, holder of the world's mile and a half grass track recqrd; Waitaki Girl, who lias a two miles record of ,4.22; and Reta Peter, twice winner of .the New Zealand Cup. W. Clifton is keeping The Abbey and Explosion going along quietly on- the training track, and Koth'ar© ready to be tuned up at any moment. Explosion shaped disappointingly as a straight-out trotter at the relief meeting, but his trainer is going to give the chestnut more time to become solid. If lie does not shape any better during the next meeting or two the chances . are the hopples, will be brought into use again, arid Explosion wilT'have to take hispl&'eer once more with the pacers. •

Belle Axworthy, wais worked with tlie hopples on. during tlie week-end. The daughter of" Travis Axworthy will not be long getting- the money, s as she has a torrent of speed. L i Grand Downs/.by. First Voyage—Mies Marvin Downs, is .rounding up under L. McMahon's supervision, but it • will be later; on in the season before this novice is ready to show, real speed. Man-o'.-Bello has been kept going sinne she raced at the relief meeting. She was not seen at her best«'theii, and, tuough she does not-promise to be- a champion,, she may-get a small stake at one or other, of the country fixtures.. Gold Treasure, who was responsible for Something.of a surprise when he won at the relief'meeting, is doing light work. He showed when he won that lie was moi;e forward than was held, and he should be a better horse when asked' to race at the Waikato meeting. Prince Triumph is shaping up nicely, and now looks a much better.horse than a month or so back. F. Smith-is putting in a.lot of time with this:trotter, but just at present the son of The Triumph requires a little more speed to warrant him being considered as'.a possible win* ner. _ , '• ■ ' ' • - The committee of the Wliangarei j Trotting Club will meet-in a day or two and draw up the programme for the meeting to be lied shortly. It is understood the big race will be a 4.42 class, but this appears to be a little loose for. the principal event, seeing that there is every chance of a 4.50 class also being included
