OBITUARY.

MR. W. J. COWELL. The funeral of the late Mr. W. J. Cowell, whose death was due to an accident at Westfield on August 8, took place at Waikumete Cemetery. A service was first held in Richmond Road Baptist Church, of which Mr. Cowell had for many years been a member, as well as a teacher in the Sunday School. The building was crowded. The services at the church and also at the grave were conducted by Pastor Chant, who was assisted by Dr. J. Farquharson Jones, and the church secretary; Mr. W. H. Newton, who also played the Funeral March and the Dead March in Saul. The ■ large number of beautiful wreaths testified to the high esteem in which Mr. Cowell was held by his friends, his fellow workers and the management of the company for which he had worked for more than 14 years. MR. ARTHUR GRAHAM. An old resident .of Ohaupu, Mr. Arthur Graham, has died at the-age of 76 years. He arrived in New Zealand from Ireland in the ship Andrew Jackson with his parents in 1865. The family settled at Mangonui, but 13 years later moved to the Waikato. Mr. Arthur Graham was ■with Mr. W. J. Hunter, auctioneer, at Ohaupu, for. 23 years, and afterwards for 27 years with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency. He was a member of the- Ohaupu Drainage Board from its inception 25 years ago. Mr. Graham was chairman for 10 years. For the past seven years he was a justice of the peace. Deceased is survived by Mrs. Graham, four sons and five daughters. MRS. W. J. ADAMS. The death occurred on September 5, at her house in Haig Avenue, Mount Roskill, of a well-known Thames resident, Mrs. W. J. Adams. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Hammond, builder, one of the early pioneers of Thames goldfields. Miss Hammond was married to Mr. W. J. Adams, who for many years prior to his death was manager of the Waitangi mine. Mrs. Adams and her family removed to Auckland a few years ago. Since, childhood she had been closely associated with the Baptist Church, Mary Street, Thames. The interment, which took place at the Hillsboro' Cemetery, was largely attended by relatives and friends. She is survived by the following children: —Messrs. William and A. G. Adams, Auckland, Mrs. Comrie, Wanganui; Mrs. Allen, and the Misses E. E. and E. W. Adams, aIT of Auckland. MR. DANIEL SHAW. One of the oldest residents of Clevedon district, Mr. Daniel Shaw, died in Auckland, aged. 78. Born in Scotland, he came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Viola in 18C5. The family went straight on to their land grant at Clevedon, and when Mr. Shaw was of age he acquired land at Ness Valley. Later he returned to the home farm at Clevedon. He was a strong supporter of the Presbyterian Church at Clevedon. :He is survived by the following chilj dren : —Mr. Daniel Shaw, of Whakatane, Mr. Thomas Shaw, of Ness Valley, and j Mrs. John Walker, of Papakura. MR. JAMES ASHCROFT. Mr. James Ashcroft, who died at Otahuhu on September 10, aged 89 years, was born in Lancashire, and came to New Zealand in 1884, settling in Napier district. On his retirement he came to live in Auckland. He is survived by the following sons:—-The Rev. Arthur Ashcroft, of Oamaru, Mr. Robert Ashcroft, of Otahuhu, Mr. Peter Ashcroft, of Napier, and Mr. Septimus Ashcroft, of Hastings. The mother of Mr. Ashcroft was one of four sisters who wore the descendants of John Guy, who, 200 years ago, founded and endowed Guy's Hospital.. Dr. D. W. Ashcroft is about to enter that hospital to complete his medical training. MRS. ANNIE E. CLARK. An old resident of the North, Mrs. Annie Clark, widow of Mr. J. J. Clark, died in Auckland at the age of 78 years. Sha came to New Zealand with her parents 60 years ago in the John Duncan. The family settled on land near Matakohe, Kaipara. Mr. Clark died eleven years ago. There is one son, Mr. E. J. Clark, of Whangarei. MRS. I. S. BATES. A well known resident of Pokeno, and later of Onewhero, Mrs. Isabella Sarah Bates, died on September 12, aged "82 years. Mr. and Mrs. T. } W. Bates came to New Zealand from Sussex in the Tongariro in 1890. For 26 years they lived in the Pokeno district, and 14 years ago moved to Onewhero. Mrs. Bates is survived by her husband and the following children: Mr. G. W. Bates. Onewhero, and Mr. H. T. Bates, Kerikeri, and six daughters, Mesdames J. T. Dean, Pokeno, A. W. Larsen, Mauku, E. M. McTavish, Opunake, R. Bates, Papakura, W. F. Anderson, Penrose, and A. Blomfield, InyercargilL MR. J. SAUNDERS. At the advanced age of 91 years, Mr. John Saunders died on September 11 at Tamaki. He was born at Claydon, Oxfordshire, Erfgland, and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Ellenbar m 1877 with his wife and seven children. Mr. Saunders farmed a small holding at Dominion Road, then removed to East Tamaki, and later went to Waihi. where he remained until eighteen months ago. Mr. Saunders is survived by the followhi<r children: Mrs. W. Bridgeman of Mount Eden. Mrs. A/ Piesse, of Grey Lynn, and Messrs. Samuel Saunders, of Waihi; W.,13. Saunders, of Petone; J. T Saunders; -of . Hawera, F. Saunders, of Svdnev: and Walter Saunders, of Auckland. There are 29 grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren.
