BOWLING.

GATHERINGS ON SATURDAY. COMPETITIVE AND SOCIAL. GRAMMAR SCHOOL REUNION. - . . . .. " (By TRUNDLER.) Bowlers had. another delightful afternoon last Saturday, aii the more enjoyable in contrast with ttie'boisterous weather on the previous two days. All the greens; were therefore well patronised, and several important engagements were, carried, out. - , . The Edwin Stars seemed likely to stay at Rawhiti, for the local club started, off well,) and at the 12th head they were leading by 15 to 4. However, it was not' owing to their more intimate knowledge of the/green, for the Rocky Nook visitors' very' much appreciated the warning given- by the club president, Mr. P. B. Thomson, that the end of the rink was to be topdressed, and that -they would find difficulty in keeping their bowls out of the ditch if they got within 3ft or 4ft. This is just the kind of sporting: spirit that helps to . preserve the purely amateur status of bowling. Neither Loram nor Keatley managed to ' produce their best form at first, whereas Neil Thomson was playing like the champion that he is, and he was mostly responsible for the good showing of Rawhiti at first. However, the visitors. came at it better during the last part, all. four playing well, and by the 20th head they were leading by 3, the details in another column showing that they eventually won the "Stars" by two points. As the Rocky Nook green is closed for the winter the new holders will defend their trophies at Carlton, the challengers being a Mount Albert rink, in charge of R. J. Allely. » There was no match for the Denison Pins on Saturday, as the Dominion Road holders were engaged in a tournament. This week's challengers are Hunt, Blincow, Bull, 0. E. Bridges (Ponsonby), and they will be followed by Buckle, Stringer, Saintv, Farland (Hillsboro'). Club Tournaments. Dominion Road and Ellerslie were both lucky in concluding their two-day tournaments in such beautiful weather, and the first day was only marred by a little squall at closing time. Dominion Road completed the section play, and it is hoped ito run off the section ties and the final next Saturday. Ellerslie got a little further, for the section winners were able to meet in the semi-finals. S. E. Harper's rink (Otahuhu) defeated J. Turner (Carlton) by 7 to 5, and J. S. Adeane (West End) beat G. W. Venables (Otahuhu) by 10 to 4. As the. winning rinks are, otherwise engaged next Saturday, they propose to play the final of 21 heads at Ellerslie on Saturday week. The Ellerslie grounds have presented a very animated appearance for the last two Saturdays, as there were 28 rinks actually competing in --the tournament, besides a few local members having a roll-up, and all the visitors were pleased to see the improvements recently effected in both the greens. Grandfathers at Devonport.' The visit of the Nomads to Devonport proved quite an interesting gathering, for the local club responded to the declared intentions of the visitors by selecting as many of their elderly" members as possible. A hearty welcome was given by the club president, Mr. F. Snoad, who congratulated Mr. J. J. Donnell on getting together such a large party during the winter', and said how pleased he was to find, that, they included so many grandfathers. Ais eloquent reply was made by Mr. J. B. Pater son,✓ Who remarked that the visitors included four great graudfathef-s, and he was glad that Devonport had adopted the, same general policy. Mr. Whitehouse responded on behalf of the original Nomads and traced the genesis of the party in a very happy speech. Souvenirs of the occasion were won by Mr. G. P. Brown (Rawhiti) and Mr. J. Foster (Devonport), skip and third in the rink that scored the highest points and also on the mtet heads. Grammar Old Boys. The Grammar match ragainst Carlton on Saturday proved a great success socially, although in the actual piny the local club were too good, and captured G wins out of 10, with a surplus of 28 points. However, the visitors did not seem to mind very much, for what pleased them most was the opportunity to meet under such favourable conditions their schoolmates of 30, 40 and 50 years ago. In J,act, it was pointed out by Mr. Eliot Davis, president of the Old Boys' Association, that there were two players competing, Messrs. F. Prime and H. F. Forder, who joined the school in the year it .was founded, 01 years ago, The Carlton president, Mr. W. J. Truscott, gave tlie visitors a very cordial welcome, remarking that it made him wish ho was a Grammar Old Boy himself, when, he looked round the room and saw such a gathering. His welcome was endorsed by Mr. J. M. Thomson, president of the Auckland Bowling Centre. Mr. Davis expressed his regret at not having taken advantage of the opportunity to meet bowlere on the green before; for he had hot played "for oyer 20 years, although he had always remained a.member of .the Auckland Bowling Club. He was thoroughly enjoying the game, but was specially pleased to meet his contemporaries from the qkl school. , < ! ■ Mr. A. Coutts, past president of Carltonj produced a framed enlaVged photograph of the gathering last year and invited the headmaster to accept it as a present from the Old Boys, as a memento of the diamond jubilee celebrations last year, when this bowling contest was initiated. Mr. 11. J. D. Mahon promised that the photograph would be hung in a place of honour in the Grammar School Hall, among all the other old boys who had distinguished themselves in various ways- ;. ■ . The names of those taking-part will be found in another column, but it should bo mentioned that apologies for unavoidable absence were -received from Messrs.. E. R. Allen, E. D. Ash ton, W. H. Bartlett, T. S. Bassctt, H. Coombc, A. R Graham, G- M. • Reid, E. Rcwcastle and S. W. Somerfield, who had all bqpn hoping to attend. _ ... < ■ Rather an unusual kind of match is to be played . at Epsom next Saturday, Queen Street bowlers against Karangahapo Road and Symonds Street. At Carlton the Soccer Old Boys are going to play the local club, and on the following Saturday the' Press 'and the Printers will play Carlton.
