GOULBURN TO SYDNEY. OPPERMAN BREAKS RECORD. SYDNEY, Sept. 14. The Goulburn-Sydney cycle road race 130 miles, was run in fine weather yesterday with a strong following wind. As a result the time records were broken in both the union's, or amateur, and the league, or'professional, sections. Tho amateur starters numbered 111 and the professionals 95, these including three Victorian cracks, Opperman, Lamb and Nicholson, who were expected to provide a sterling race from scratch. Nicholson had a puncture 20 miles from the start and Lamb had one a little later. Opperman then pushed through, and overtook Ross .and Thomas, with whom he sprinted to the finish. The professional race resulted as follows: —G. Hird (Hurlestone Park), 70m handicap, 6h 22m 30s, 1; L. Petrie (Concord), 50m handicap, 6h 2m 30 l-5s 2; V. Routley (Charlingford), 45m handicap, Oh 2m 3s; H. Williamson'(Paddington), 45m handicap, 6h 2m 0 l-ss, 4. Hird beat Petrie in the final sprint by a wheel. . Opperman made the fastest time, 5h 46m 10s, and broke the record by 34m 10s.

The amateur race resulted as follows: P. Burley (Duhvich), 514 m handicap, time, 6h 21m 51 3-ss, 1; A. Huntley (Lakemba), same handicap, 6h '21m 5} 4-ss, 2; J. Freeman (Newcastle), 53 handicap, 6h 2m 225, 3; W. Greenwood (Bankstown), 53m handicap, 4. Tho four placed men were associated practically for the whole journey and shared the special sprinting prizes. The road was good but . several competitors suffered punctures. One or two fell badly. Burley won with a good finishing sprint by a wheel. The fastest time was that of Edgar Johns (Newcastle), 5h 46m 10 I:ss, or 10m 30s better than the record.

MANUKAU AMATEUR CLUB. Delightful weather favoured the riders in the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club's junior and senior road races at Mount Roskill on Saturday. No record times were established for conditions did not permit. A strong southerly over the first two miles of each circuit slowed the riders. The juniors came out in greater force than ever. Eighteen, of the youngsters competed in their five miler over one lap. They were sent off in the following order: J. R. Bowen, D. Porthous, off limit, 3m 30s; J. B. Sparrow, W. H. Evans, P. H. Bicknell, N. East, 3m ; I. C. Bellini, L. Cogan, J. Bates, 2m 20s; W. Webb, K. H. Ingram, L. E. Cox, A. H. Bowen, G. A. Thompson, lm 30s; L. Oxton, S. D. Budge, lm; A. W. Robinson, 15s and H. V. Gordon, scr. The placed juniors were : — J. Bates' (2m 20s), actual riding time 15m 48s 1 L. Cogan (2m 20s), 15m, 54s 2 D. L. Porthous (3m 30s), 17m 10s' ... 3 G. A. Thompson (lm 30s),' 15m 15s; A. H. Bowen (lm 30s), 15m 18s. A. W. Robinson, 15s, registered fastest time in 14m 10s, while H. V. Gordon finished 51s behind the winner to clock 14m 19s. Portage, of Otahuhu, who wished to try conclusions. with the best riders of the club, also started off scratch. The results were:— W. Borland (10m), actual riding time, 78m 49s 1 E. D. Harris (sm), 76m 355; G. P. Clark (sm), 76m 40s. The above were the only riders to survive the distance. J. Whitten, scratch, was the fastest in 71m 20s, with J. H. Wade, 2m, second fastest in 73m 2ls. AUCKLAND CLUB. Saturday was the big day for cash riders, .when the longest race of the Auckland Cycl« Club's weekly road races was decided. This was the 40-mile handicap for the Mabin Cup, donated by A. C. ("Booker") Herring, vice-president of the club. P'-»''liead conditions were ideal for racing, c I a record field for the season started, 19 riders-being dispatched. The course was over undulating roads, a circuit of 11 miles being used three times, and one of the 7s-niile circuit. The riders left in the following order:—W. Hills,- 21m; F. Lowndes, K.
