The opening night of the euchre V tournament at v Raurimu was -well attended last Wednesday. Prizes given by Mr. H. Fiveashe wei*e won by Mrs. ..;/ H. Crocker, jun., and Mr. C. There was a large attendance of young people, including -' many visitors from surrounding districts. Popular music was supplied by Mrs. Noone, Mr. H. W. Gibbs and Mr. J. Ferry. A; novelty extra with mouth organs, played by Messrs. J. Drum and F-Jeffs, was appreciated. Guessing com- ' petitions were won by the following:— Mrs. Jeffs, Miss Pearl Kimber, Mr. Alex. Gray. Duff are ;V officials of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. and Mrs. Duff were presented with a firescreen, and Mr. and Mrs. Westlake were presented with glassware. During the evening vocal items were contributed by Miss Watson, Mesdames Shaw, Duff, Washer and Mr. Wilkie. During the afternoon songs and musical items -were contributed by Miss Thelma Duffin and Miss Sylvia Simm. Two amusing competitions were held, the prize-win-ners being. Miss Clare Johnston and Miss .. Thelma Duffin. Mrs. Brooker received 7| n floral crepe de chine, in. tones of M "beige and royal blue. The Manurewa Theatre was packed to its doors on Thursday evening last, when a,'concert programme was, presented by children of the Manurewa Children's Home. -The function is an annual one and never fails to. create wide interest in the district, - Mr. A. •C. '-A. Sexton occupied the chair, aiid he; congratulated the matron, Miss !,CS J. -Mai'ks, on her efforts :}n training the. children. Reference Was also made -to those who had assisted in , preparing the numerous frocks and' fancy costumes worn. The ' programme consisted mainly of action songs, recitations, and exhibitions of physicar drill, a display of the latter by a number of the boys earning well-merited applause. The following children contributed Recitations Miss Anona Murton, Miss Mavis MacGregor, Miss Joan Chandler, Masters Desmond Delaney, Barney Snell and Arthur Chandler. The . latter part of the programme was devoted to a humorous cantata, entitled "The Doll's Wedding,".. an iteni which created much amusement. Several of the young performers displayed exceptional ability.

On! the occasion of / the seventieth birthday "of Mr. T. Highfield, of Middlemore Road, Otahuhu, the Otahuhu Methodist Memorial Hall was beautifully decorated with streamers in shades of royal blue and maroon. The birthday party was arranged by the members of the Young Women's and Young Men's Bible classes. The guest of 'honour has been the leader of the young men's class for the last- nine years.'' Mr". L/ Enting was in. the chair. Solos- were given by Miss Jean Hunter, Messrs. G. W.- Venablesj Wakelin and Edward Harvie, while Mr. Howard Andrew gave an elocutionary item. Mr. K. Handisides, in aJ pleasing speech, extended t'o Mi". Highfield birthday greetings from the combined Bible classes, and trusted:that,he would, l?e spared for many years to come. He referred to. the influence •which Mr. Highfield had had upon the lives eff -the young men of the church during his years of .leadership. He then presented the guest with a fountain pen and pencil, together with a book in which the Bible class members had inscribed their, names. Miss B. Couper presented Mrs. Highfield with a bouquet of violets. M 1; Highfield suitably replied; pn behalf of himself and his wife. The audience then sang "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," after which coloured streamers were thrown round the recipients. A competition was won by Mrs.. Paine, with Mrs. Shepherd, second. .
