CAN HISTORY BE REPEATED?

When Limerick achieved his right to championship rank iu his three-year-old career in the autumii he did so by, among other things, the relegation of Pantheon, the acknowledged stayer of the day, into second place in the Cumberland Stakes and the A.J.C. Plato' (says an Australian writer). That astute judge, Mr. J. E. Brien, owner of Pantheon, took the defeat as a sportsman. "Wait until next season," ho said, "when, this youngster has a four-year-old weight to carry. Then wo will se how Pantheon sh&pes against him." His judgment was vindicated, for in the spring Limerick, with 8.11, found Pantheon his master in the A.J.C. Plate, in which Pantheon, after making his own pace, outstayed his younger rival. Can tho history 'be repeated so far as Phar Lap is concerned? Last season it was Nightraarcli- who was the proven stayer of the spring, and he found Phar Lap lengths his superior iu tho autumn. The honours of the contests between the two rest with Plu><- Lap, but it will be interesting to see how Nightinari-h shapes against him in the longer weight-for-ago races this spring.

STABLE AND TRACK NOTES. COMING EVfTNTS. (By WHALEBONE.) September 20—Ashburton County R.C. September 20, 22—Avondale J.C. September 25, 27—GeraLdine K.C. September 27 —Hawke's Bay J.C. October 4—Napier Park K.C. October 4—Kurow J.C. October -i, 6—Auckland K.C. October 9, 11—Dunedin J.C. Protomint, the three-year-old son oi Catmint and Protocol, is due to race a< the Avondale meeting next week. He has wintered well and has grown into a goodlooking sort, who should be capable ol paying his way when properly seasoned. Golden Sceptre, the Eosenor—Moiselk juvenile in A. Cook's stable at Te Awam.utu, has improved a good deal durinj the past month and is now hitting out ii good style in his track work. He shapes as though he will come to hand early ant is due to have his first race at the Avondale meeting next week. On several occasions recently Subeditor has shown improved form in liis track gallops and he is expected to race prominently in his coming engagements at Avondale. The three-year-old son oj Surveyor has grown into a solid-looking customer and is now better conditionec than ever and should race accordingly. During the past five seasons the Avon dale Stakes have been won on three occa sions by two-year-olds trained at T< Awamutu, which is a very creditabli record. There are several promising juveniles from that district engaged ii the "classic" event next week and ii would not surprise to find another victorj being added to the list. A. Kemp has Eager Eose in great ordei for her Avondale Cup contest next Saturday and it will not be for lack of condition if she fails to run prominently on the day. She has done a solid preparation and has never looked better than she does at the present stage. Eager Eose can be relied on to run out ten furlongs in attractive style and she is sure to get good support next Saturday. / The latest track doings of Gay Cockade clearly indicate that the bay gelding can be expected to get some stake-money before the spring meetings are over. It is doubtful if he has ever been more solid than at present, while he is also holding his condition much better than formerly. The Depredation gelding usually races well when the ground is soft and should be a good one to keep in mind for the early meetings.

The Valkyrian—Te Akitai two-year-old Sir Val "has had to be thrown out of work for the time being owing to a cold. He will be recommissioned again later in the season.

Soloist, the half-brother to Supremacy, is o-rowing into a promising-looking juvenile. His trainer, W. Stone, does not intend to hurry him and he will not be raced until the autumn.

A pleasing feature concerning the Avondale Cup is the fact that seventeen of the twenty-four horses entered for that race have been accepted for. Included among those engaged are some of the best handicap performers racing at the present time and the event is sure to provide a stirring contest.

Two surprise defections in the Flying Handicap to be run at Avondale next Saturday were Chromadyne and Cylinder, whose names were missing when the list of acceptances was posted yesterday. However, they both figure in races to be run on the second day of the meeting.

Tinker Belle, the half-sister to Mangani, by King Nassau, who is now a member of"F. Loomb's stable, is getting throujjh a steady preparation at Te Awamutu." She was started on three occasions last season and the experience should prove useful to her when required to race later on in the season.

The Chief Ruler gelding Eoyal Ruler has been paid up for in the Flying Handicap and the Henderson Handicap, to be run on the opening day of the Avondale meeting. At the time of writing it is not definitely known which race the Te Awamutu-trained gelding will contest.

Awaken, who has been accepted for in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, put up several good performances as a two-year-old last season. If started she will be meeting a first-class field of sprinters; still, judged on last season's form, she should be capable of holding her own against them.

Sir Mond, who has engagements at the approaching Avondale meeting, has been brought across to Ellerslie and will be located there until the Avondale meeting is over. He was given a run over five furlongs yesterday morning and shaped well. He is still as robust-looking as ever, but, judging by his appearance, he has done plenty of work.

The aged gelding Thurnus, who won a couple of races last season, is shaping well in his track work at Te Awamutu. He is not engaged at Avondale, but is beiii"- "ot ready to race at some of the meetings near at hand. The Thuinham "elding is'not brilliant, but he stays on well, and rightly placed should win races during the current season.

During the short time The Fox has been in action at Ellerslie he has made good headway and F. Western is now speeding the "Romeo gelding up in his work. He displayed a good dash of pace in a five-furlong gallop on Thursday inornin<r, and with a race or two to sharpen him up will have to be considered for events ahead.

Since racing at the Pakuranga meeting Hannibal has done exceptionally weH and his gallop over a round on the No. 3 grass track on Thursday morning was one of the best efforts. seen for some time. He is on the minimum in the Avondale Cup and. judged on his latest track doings, he will have decidedly more than an outside chance in that event.

Although Gold Money and Ruling King are not engaged at the Avondale meeting, W. Kemp is giving them plenty of serviceable work at headquarters. Ruling King has improved a good deal during the past few weeks and is now shaping much better in his work. Owing to the fact that he was growing very fast as a two-year-old, the Chief Ruler gelding was only started twice last season, but, judging by his appearance, he should do well during the present term.

Few hacks at Ellerslie are doing better than Catoma, who was responsible fora pleasing effort when he won the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga meetin"'. Although this gelding is not a good track worker, he recorded several sound gallops recently, while his condition also shows considerable improvement since he raced at Ellerslie. Like the majority of the defunct Catmint's progeny, Catoma revels in heavy ground, and with every indication of such conditions prevailing at Avondale his prospects appear good.
