TAUBANGA

The Tauranga Municipal Band will be represented at the Dominion baud contesta to be held in Wellington in February. It has been decided to hold a ball in the Town Hall 011 October 13 in aid of the pew uniform fund.

ROTORUA. At the meeting of the Kotorua Borough Council last -week, a letter was received from the Defence Department in connection with the use of the drill hall. It was stated that, although the hall would not be used as heretofore owing to the retrenchment policy of the Government, the Department did not propose to dispose of the building. Permission to erect a hangar for Kotorua Airways, Ltd., was deferred until the land for the aerodrome had been properly vested in the council. Since last meeting building permits to the value of £4170 15/ were issued. The council adopted the suggestion of the Ratepayers' Association that Mr. C. H. Clinkafd, M.P., be asked to request the Government to allow the Swedish expert, Professor Hornell, to report on the possiblities of the Kaituna River as a source of hydro-electric power for the town.

TAUMARUNUI. A successful dance was held on Wednesday evening, September 3, in the Theatre Royal Annexe, in aid of the funds of the Taumarunui Boys' Band. The dance music was supplied by Mrs. McElroy, Miss Bolland and Messrs. L. Rickard and J. McMinn. The Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Miss Watson and Mr. J. Wells, and Mr. McGlynn won the cake competition. Mr. D. Mackay, head teacher of the Ohura High School, has been promoted to the position of agricultural inspector for the Taranakl Education Board. Mr. McKay, during his stay in Ohura. has taken a keen interest in all sports. He was club captain of the tennis club, a member of the general and grounds committee of the golf club, and secretary of the Ohura Rugby sub-union. The Matiere hall committee held an "old-time hard-up" dance on Friday last, when old folks and young turned out looking really ridiculous. After supper a mock court was held. Mr. Ross' orchestra played the dance music. Prizes for the "most hard-up couple" were won by Mrs. Gibson and Mr. Dench. Savage A. S. Laird was rangatira at Thursday evening's korero of the Taumarunui" Savage Club. Savage W. Hughes, Mr M. Winter, and Mr. Gorbey sang, accompanied by Savage Edwards at the piano. Savage Kenderdine. Mr. M. Winter of the Te Awamutu Orphans' Club, and Savage Laird entertained the audience with some well-chosen stories. Savage Knapp, accomnauied fcy Savage Edwards, plaved a violin solo. Savage Thompson recited, and Savago Campbell gave an entertaining reading.
