WELLINGTON WINS.

MATCH WITH CANTERBURY. ELEVEN" POINTS TO THREE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.') CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Eight thousand people watched Canterbury play Wellington to-day in cold weather. There were frequent showers, and the ground was slippery. J. Robilliard replaced Hart in the Canterbury team, which kicked oil' against a strong wind. Wellington hooked from the first scrum, but King cut oif lvilby's pass, only to drop the ball. A penalty put Canterbury on the attack, and the rearguard swung into action, Lilburne being collared inside the twenty-five. Then Robilliard broke through, badly beating Mackay. He in-passed near the line to Lilburne, who was collared. Play was fast and open. Another sweeping Canterbury rush, started by Innes, penned Wellington 011 the line, the forwards battling vigorously.

At length Wellington worked past half-way, and Kilby sent the backs off, Mackay being pushed out ten yards from the corner. A powerful kick by Stewart relieved Canterbury. Wellington were quickly back, and, taking a pass from Nicholls, Mackay scored wide out. Heazlewood kicked a magnificent goal.

Excitement was caused two minutes later when Foley broke clean through from half-way for 40 yards. Price, however, lost a certain try by knocking on. Now Canterbury began attacking again, Lilburuo repeatedly cutting out a man, though the greasy ball made good handling impossible. Cottrell and Manchester showed up in a dribbling rush, in which the ball was cheeked. Play hung about half-way for ten minutes, with Canterbury holding the ascendancy in the line-outs, but the backs were too closely marked to make use of opportunities. McLean, Jcssep and Reid led the Wellington forwards to the opposing twenty-five, where Mullau found the line. The half-time scores were:—

Wellington 5 Canterbury 0 In the second spell Wellington made tho first attack, but Lilburne snapped tho ball from tho toes of the opposing pack and with a high punt shifted play to the other end. Another rush sent Canterbury back and Fulton had to force. Wellington kept hammering until Mackay dived across at the corner with two men on top of him. Hcazlewood missed with the kick. The wind was nowassisting Canterbury, but hard kicking lost them chances. In addition Hcazlewood was flawless on defence. He missed nothing. Once Robilliard cut through and down the centre, but Ball downed him from behind. Then Lilburuo streaked for the corner, fending off three men. His wing man, however, was out of position. The scene changed swiftly when Ball gained possession and ran almost tho full length of the ground and passed to Oliver, who scored ut the corner, amid cheers. Heazlewood's kick fell short. Wellington 11, Canterbury 0.

Both sides were infusing great vim into their play, but Wellington had the better finish. A penalty to Canterbury saw Lilburne miss by inches. The last stages were exciting. Lilburne scored after a great run by Robilliard from half-way, in which he eluded Mackay. Lilburne failed to convert. Wellington 11, Canterbury 3.

After a series of line-outs in the Canterbury twenty-five the Wellington backs tried to get through, but Fulton checked them. Then Barry tried to get over, but was grassed. Wellington were still attacking when the bell rang, leaving the final scores: Wellington , 11 Canterbury 3 The referee was Mr. T. Macintosh. GRADE GAMES. SECOND GRADE.
