(By Telegraph. —Parliamentary Keporter.)
WELLINGTON, Friday. "I think we are doing the right thing in admitting medical B^ ** S j Helens hospitals, _ said the Hon. . c;(-nil worthy, Minister of Health, m the House to-day when the Health Estimates were under review. The Minister added that while the Act did not specifically give the right of such entry to the institutions, it did not prohibit it. _ Mr. P. Eraser (Wellington Central): It ■ was never contemplated. The Act should be amended. The Minister said, it was not correct to say tha£ insufficient maternity nurses and midwives were being trained. That training was being continued at a oreater rate than that_ at which the services were being utilised. In New Zealand some 200 maternity nurses and midwives were being trained a year,
against the 50 produced by Denmark, the V country frequently mentioned in discuivfl sions on the subject.
Mr. Stallworthy added that out of the | 2400 cases dealt with by the St. Helens M institutions last year only 368 werevij attended by medical students, the remainder being attended by maternity nurses or midwives. ■'
