NATIONAL BOARD PROPOSED
NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING.

A national board, : charged .with the question of thorough investigation, ol iires and fire causes to act as a check on the careless and criminal fires, as well as an educational force, may come, into existence ae the result of negotiations which are proceeding between Mr. A. V. Shorter, representative of the Council of. Fire Underwriters, Mr. J. H. Jerram, superintendent of the State Fire Insurance Department, and the Minister in charge of the State Fire Insurance Department, Sir Apirana Ngata. The main question under consideration concerns' the degree of authority that should be vested in the board.
The great annual fire losa of the Dominion (something like 5/ per head each year) has caused .concern to the Government, and it is regarded as certain to act in the near future, ae soon as finality is reached on the present proposals.
