REVIEW OF THE FIELDS,

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.")

CHRISTCHUR6H, this day,

The spring meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club will be held tomorrow. The various events have attracted good acceptances, with the exception of the slow mile and a quarter race,, which has a field of ten. This is rather surprising, as the distance is popular with owners. In the slow class trotters' and pacers' races there are competitors who have no previous racing experience, but some have been showing good form in their training work, so that interesting contests should be seen, and if the track remains good fast times will be recorded. The first race will be started at 12.15 p.m. The Improvers. There is a field of. twenty:two in this event, with fourteen on the limit. The class is 3.50, but it is certain that the winner will require to go a good deal better than handicapped. Of those on the limit Rey has been trotting well in her work, but she may do better after a race or two. Welcome Guy, who is now trained by J. J. Kennerley, should find the mile track to his liking, and El Merit has been working well. Waiata Poi has a good deal of speed, but she does not always begin well.- -If the scratch division race up to their best form it does not seem as though the back markers can have much chance., but young trotters rarely show their best without race experience. The favourites may be REY, EL MERIT, WAIATA POI. , Belfast Handicap. There is a useful lot of pacers in the slow class mile and a half event. If the three-year-old Goldvorthy has improved in stamina she should show up well off the limit, while Desert Rey is also a possibility, as he lias been pacing weir in his work. Stowaway won at Oamaru in May, but was placed second owing to interference, and he has a good deal in his favour from the time test. Silver Sea has a lot of speed, but does not stay well, and Dusolina has not been long enough in work to be seen at her best. Millie de Oro is an improving pacer. There should be good support for ~-',. ..:^

STOWAWAY, GOLDWOJRTHY, MILLIE DE ORO,

Burwood Handicap. The chief event of the day looks like being very keenly contested. At the end of last' season Kautoma went over a mile and a quarter in good time, and off the limit he should race well. Proud Dillon showed good form at; ■ Addington last month and' should beat Tumatakuru.off 12yds. Regal Voyage was heavily backed at Addington m, the Belgium Handicap, in which, however, she raced badly. Baynut is.-not racing in his best form at present, and uranite City seems to be too unlucky at.present to win a race. Sonoma is a.good stayer, but has not been racing well of. late, while Cotintry King's recent efforts do not justify him.being backed with confidence. Shady Spot is ; a good stayer who raced consistently at Addington. last month. Fair Wave also stays well, but .on form Apex should beat her, as he performed very consistently at Addington. On the last day he was beaten by Royal Silk from a 4.39 mark in a 4.40 class, and he went 4.29 2*, while-he is now handicapped at 4.36. Sunny Bob has not been racing much lately, and Pageant is on 108 yds, which seems too much to give away to horses likely to improve considerably on their handicaps. The final summing up may fee

APEX, REGAL VOYAGE, PROUD DILLON. Seaview Handicap.

Captain Wrack, who is partial to a ehort distance, should beat Danny Boy and Play Wave off the same mark. Tenedoa is a useful sort, who won in each of his three starts, last season, and he should prove superior to Erin s Lynn. S6dium went a fine race in the Advance Handicap on the first day of the August meeting, when he finished second to George Key, being beaten by a narrow margin, and the race should have done him a lot of good. Warrenore is speedy over the distance, and so is Baron Bingen. The race may be fined down to . ' SODIUM, : TENEDOS, , ; BARON BINGES.

Autumn Handicap. For, the two-mile trotters' race there is a field of thirteen. Repeta Mae, who has been trotting in' improved form in her work, and Wattle Patch, who won at Oamaru in May, are on the limit, and they should both race well, depute is very uncertain in her gait, but jst. Petrox has been showing improved form in his recent races. Oval does not stay well, and White Satin raced badly last month, although showing speed-, especially in her.first race,'■■in-the Introductory Handicap. Midland raced well at Addington on the'last day, when he was second to Admiral Bingen m the Midwinter Handicap, l but if Home ■>Voyage keeps steadily, to his work lie , seems to. possess the best chance amongst the back-markers.- Backers will probably go for , : A;'' : WATTLE PATCH, :•"■ •■-.. HEPETA MAC, r HOME VOYAGE. ~; Dash Handicap. Y< ■ Captain Wrack (if reserved for this event) and Venarc seem to be the best of the «limit division, but Brenthgnt, Sodium and Warrenore are a strong trio ,oh 12yds. If'Kautoma is kept for this 'race, in preference to starting in the two-mile event, he may race well ofl 24yds. Tactless is, probably short ot .work, and Black Wattle does not -.seem be improving. Sir Author and Mac Dillon are partial to. the distance. Good lacking should be accorded. . 'j'. jV sodium; ;: "■;•" . ; - :■:. CAPTAIN , WHACK, . M ;■ " SIR AUTHOR.,:,. ; &■£?£&

Wainoni Handicap. There is a large field, of nineteen in the mile and a quarter, and this should prove a very interesting contest. The winner seems likely to come from the 24yds division, where there is a strong contingent. Royal Comrade, if he could be relied upon to do his best, would take a lot of beating, but he is very unreliable at the barrier, and also when on the journey. Ngahuia showed a lot of dash in his races at Addington, but failed to stay. Aleron will do well on the big track, if he remains sound, and Shady Spot was very consistent in his racent racing. Of those further back, the chances of Dilnon and El Direct appear to be the best. Possibly the' favourites will be SHADY SPOT, NGAHUIA, ALERON.

Electric Handicap,

The mile saddle event will conclude the day's racing, and there is a field of fourteen engaged. On the limit are Harley Dillon, who won at Cheviot last March in 2.17 2-5, also Tannhwiser, an unsound pacer, who went 2.16 2-5 when he won at the Methven meeting nearly a year ago. These two are certain to receive solid support. Brook Pointer races well in saddle and will be favoured by the mile track. Hostess has a lot of speed, and Mercury is a good performer in saddle events. Backers may rely-upon- • ■ • • ; TANNHAUSER, HARLEY DILLON, MERCURY.

NOTES FOR NEW BRIGHTON.

APEX WELL HANDICAPPED.

Home Voyage performed well in the latter part of last season but he does not look to have muc?. chance of succeeding in the Improvers' Trot, in which he is set to concede up to 216 yds start in a mile and a half. Tenedos, on 12yds in the- Seaview Handicap, a 2.55 mile and a quarter, only raced three times last season and won each time. The classes were not good,; Jbut three wins in succession suggests that Tenedos is a useful sort.

Shady Spot has been an unlucky pacer and no matter how good a race he goes there is always at least one to beat him. His turn may come in the Burwood Handicap, in which he is on 36yds. He went a couple of solid races at the recent Metropolitan meeting, and in much better fields than he meets tomorrow he finished fourth.

The_ Australian-bred pacer Black Wattle, is - handicapped on 2.17 in the Electric Handicap. This should give the chestnut gelding a chance, as he won at Greymouth in January' last, going 2.26 3-5 for eight and a half furlongs. There will be a big field in the Belfast Handicap and few outside the limit horses -will get a good run. In a smaller field Automatic, 36yds, or 3.37, would have a chance. . Last season at Wellington he ran second in 3.44 2 : 5 for a mile and five furlongs, which is a furlono, further than he has to go tomorrow. .. Proud Dillon, who is engaged in the Burwood and Wainoni Handicaps, has gone 2:14 2-5 for one mile, and 4.37 for two miles, the latter performance, being recorded when he finished thijd in the Belgium Handicap at Addington. last month. He is on 4.39 to-morrow in the two.miles and 2.48 in the mile and a quarter.

•lA 1 horse who reads .particularly well| handicapped is Sodium in the Seaview; ■Handicap. At Ashburton in May he won the. Rakaia Handicap in 2.16, and at'the "Metropolitan , meeting last" month. was, second in- the Advance Handicap,l

when the track was not fast, and went 2.50 3-5 for the mile and a quarter. Now he is on 2.53 in a 2.55 class. White Satin failed badly each time at the Metropolitan meeting last month, but it was generally held that she would do better when racing at two miles. In the Autumn Handicap tomorrow she is on 4.45, and if she is as good as thought she should be in the money. If there is anything in times Apex should be about when the judge is singling out the leaders at the end of the Burwood Handicap. The Denver Huon gelding th.ee weeks ago, from a 4.39 mark, finished second in the Islington Handicap at Addington, going 4.29 2-5. To-morrow he is on 4.36 in a 4.40 class. At Ashburton in June Brook Pointer finished third in the Farewell Handicap in 2.15 from a 2.18 mark. The Logan Pointer gelding is on 2.17 in the mile saddle to-morrow. At the Canterbury Park meeting in June Brentlight ran third in the Harewood Handicap and registered the fast time of 3.22 1-5 from a 3.30 mark. This works out at a 2.15 gait for the mile and a half, and in the Dash Handicap tomorrow he is on 2.18 over one mile. He should certainly give those behind him something to do.
