RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN.
CONFIDENCE IN CABINET
MINISTER.
TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
' NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday
Recognising his services to education, tho Taranaki Education Board t<?-day re-elected the Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour, chairman of the board. . The deputy-chairman, Mr. P. J. HWhite, said while the public might think it was unusual to propose a member of Cabinet for the position,-he felt that the present time was critical on the administrative side of education. All associated with education felt that a retrograde step would be taken if anything was done to centralise control. Bureaucratic control was not popular in self-governing Dominions, and some of the proposals in the Education Committee report amounted almost to dictatorship. This was a question upon which.. members were unanimous, and they felt that Mr. Smith had supported them in their views.
