LEGAL INQUIRY COLUMN.

(By BARRISTER AT LAW.) [Letters of inquiry will be answered every week in this column. As far as possible they will be dealt with in the order in which they are received, and replies will be inserted with the least possible delay.]

ARGUMENT.—AIiens are not entitled to - the old age pension, but an alien who lias resided' in New Zealand for -o years and has been naturalised for one year may apply. POT —A second-hand dealer's license * "would .be unnecessary. Whether a hawker's license would be required would depend on the by-laws of the various .districts in which you operated. ERIC. —Unless yon have been authorised to sign and the bank has been Informed of your authority, you will be unable to operate.

WORKER. —The ring belongs to the woman, and she may dispose of it as she likes. ENGINEER—It is inadvisable for each to do half of the fence. Serve a notice to fence or to repair, and you will then be able to have the whole fence attended to at the joint expense of your neighbour and yourself. LEGAL. —I presume you mean sewers and not field drains. All persons served by the drain are liable to contribute towards the cost of repairs. INQUIRER. —The total cost, including stamp duty, would probably exceed £20. W.F.D. —You are liable for rates as lessee or tenant.

INQUIRER. —Your creditor need not accept payment by Instalments at all, but may press for payment in one sum. If you can persuade him to accept 2/6 per week you can count yourself fortunate. ANXIOUS.—It is not too late to claim damages, but you will have difficulty in explaining away the delay, and also in satisfying the court that the machine was in bad order when you got it. If yon complained at first, so that the seller has all along been aware of the defect in the machine, there should be no difficulty. ANXIOUS.—It seems clear to me that your agent is too careless, and not persistent enough. I would advise putting the matter in the hands of yonr solicitor or distraining on the tenant's goods. SEAMAZE.—U) If y° u want a supply you must pay for the connection from the mains. If that connection is damaged you must pay for repairs. (2) The Jocal by-laws will govern the council's power in the matter. I have little doubt that they provide for such a power. It would be preposterous if the leak was allowed to continue and no step could be taken to stop it. LOGIC. —I am quite unable to understand your questions. Write again and plainly state what you want to know. An illegitimate child cannot claim under an 'intestacy through his father, but if legitimated he can. VEHICLE. —If you were granted a driver's license you would probably not find the other matters difficult to overcome. You would largely be in the hands of the traffic inspector, and if he was not satisfied with your driving: you would not get a license. TILES.—The fee you have paid may be intended to cover all the work. In any case you are not likely to be charged more than £7 more. WORKER. —Yon will lose all your assets and may have your discharge withheld until you have made some payment oft your debts. Your wife's home is probably secure from your creditors. WORRIED. —You will be able to obtain a divorce providing your wife does not defend the proceedings. You will have to pay some maintenance. ANXIOUS. —Gift duty would be payable if the transaction was completed in any one year. K, however, you spread it over three years, no duty will be payable.
