STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

(By WHALEBONE.)

Shining Armour, who has been off the scene for over twelve moHths, lias been nominated, for hurdle events at the Wanganui meeting. A few seasons ago he was a fair performer on the flat.

The Swift Flight gelding, Foxhound claims an engagement in the Greenmount Steeplechase and the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, and will probably contest both events. He lias not had much experience over country, and so far his efforts have been very moderate.

Marjoram showed good form at the Manawatu- winter meeting, winning the Clifford Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 9.7. and just being beaten by Paddon on the second day over nine furlongs. Marjoram has not raced, since, but lie is engaged at the Marton meeting early next month.

Hynanna only recommenced, racing at the Manawatu winter meeting, but he showed in the Newbury Handicap, nine furlongs, that he was coming back to form, by being one of the leaders till the straight was reached. He is engaged at the Marton and Wanganui spring meetings early next month, and if he is anywhere approaching his best he should be hard to beat in his engagements.

Simba showed good form last season as a two-year-old, winning the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui and the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke's Bay spring meeting, while he was third in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. He was unplaced in his other two starts,, and has not raced since last December. Simba figures among the entries for the Wanganui spring meeting.

The local liack "Wild Country, who lias been shaping well in lier latest track work, will contest the Sylvia Park Handicap on Saturday. She did a fair amount of racing last season, but failed to reach the winning list, although she showed up well in several of her engagements. ZSTo fault can be found with her condition at the present stage and that may assist her at the coming meeting.

Don Quixote, who won the Great Northern St. Leger at the Auckland autumn meeting at Easter time, was not raced again till the Wellington winter meeting, when he ran unplaced in the Whyte Handicap, one mile. He is engaged in the Abbotsford Handicap, six and a half furlongs, at the forthcoming Hawke's Bay Hunt meeting, and is also nominated for the Wanganui spring meeting.

Star Stranger, who has not raced since the Auckland autumn meeting, has been nominated for the Wanganui spring meeting next month, being engaged in the Marangai Handicap, one inile and 110 yards, on the first day, and the Higgle Handicap on the second day. Last season he only won two races, the Trentham Gold Cup and the President's Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Ellerslie. However, he was most unlucky to get beaten in the Auckland Cup.

Hunting Cry's engagements in Australia (says a Sydney writer) include the Caulfieid Cup (9.0) and Melbourne Cup (8.13), and, all going well, he will be sent to Victoria after fulfilling his Sydney programme. Cameron, however, is not exactly confident that Hunting Cry will stand up to a severe .preparation. "I am hopeful that everything will be all right," he said, "but the colt broke down soon after winning the last Great Northern Derby. He has a bad knee, and it ifbmains to be seen whether he will stand, but he is an infinitely better galloper than his appearance suggests, and I am hoping for the best."

Vertigern seems to race well when fresh and during hie last three seasons he has been in the money in his first or second start. Last season he had his first race in the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui, when he finished third to Laughing Prince and Admiral Drake, but it was not till the autumn that he got on the winning list—the Awapuni Gold Cup. That was his only success during the season, though he was placed on five other occasion's. Vertigern is due to make his nest appearance at the Wanganui spring meeting nest month. He is at present being trained there.

Eager Rose continues to shape well in her training work at Ellerslie, despite the fact that she was allowed to forego her Jellicoe Handicap engagement. Sue is due to make her first appearance this season at the Avondale meeting next month, and by the time that fixture comes round she should be just about back to her best racing condition again.

All going well, Nightmarcn will have the first race of his present Australian tour in the Warwick Stakes, of one mile, on Saturday, August 30. As Phar Lap, Limerick, Amounis, and Chide are also engaged in that race, the result should give a fair idea of what we may' expect of the champions in their later spring engagements.

Black Mint, after competing unsuccessfully at. the Grand National meeting last season, won the Neagle Handicap, one mile and a quarter, "at 'Dannevii'ke, and followed this up by running second t,o Barometer in the big'race each day at the Marton spring meeting. Black Mint is engaged in the Neagle Handicap at Dannevirke next Wednesday and also figures in the Marton Handicap to be decided next month.

The maideu candidate Puriri Park is making steady progress afc Ellerslie and lias displayed a fair amount of speed on the few occasions that he lias been sprinted. The Australian-bred three-year-old is one of the long-striding sort" and 011 that account may not be seen at his best until the going is firm and dry. Puriri Park has never raced, but promises to develop into a payable proposition later 011 in the season.

At the Pakuranga meeting last season Sea Cob won the Auckland Handicap, one mile, and since then has been successful on three other occasions. His last start was in the President's Handicap, six furlongs, at the Waipa meeting, ii> which event he finished third to Marble King and Sir Ivay. Sea Cob is engaged in the Dunedin Handicap next Saturday, but will require to show improved form to beat the opposition in that event.

Although Lucy Rose failed to earn a winning bracket in , the twenty-seven races that she contested last season, the daughter of Lueullus put up several good performances. She did not have the best of luck in several of her races, otherwise the result may have been different, and she might do better this year. Lucy Hose is due to contest the Dunedin Handicap at Ellcrslie next Saturday, and if started should get a fair measure of support.

The Peach Brandy three-year-old Karangapai has improved considerably during the short time he has been in work, following on a spell since last autumn. He has grown and thickened out quite a lot and is now much more solid-looking than he was . last season. J. Chisholm is not hurrying Karangapai in his preparation, but when properly seasoned he should more than fulfil the promise he showed earlier in his career.

Blimp found the winter weights a but too much for him, but he is reported to have run good races at the Grand National meeting. He was better suited by the lighter scale that operated on the concluding day, and finished third to Eanelagh and -Sancy Lee in the Selwyn Handicap, seven furlongs. Blimp will probably have his next.outing at the Wanganui meeting, and he should be very hard to beat before the spring fixtures are very much advanced-

Luminary has been nominated for hurdle events at the Wanganui meeting. He did well at the Great Northern meeting, annexing the Panmure and the Orakei Hurdles in his only /Wo starts at the meeting. The wire accepting for him in hurdle events at Wellington last month w-ent astray, and the only race he could start in was the High-weight Handicap. In that event he was made a warm favourite, but got his tongue over the bit and spoiled his chances.

Equitant was an unlucky two-year-old, being placed on eight occasions out of twelve, starts. Last season, however, as a three-year-old, she did better, winning on four occasions, while she was second three times and third once. Her last success was in the Boyough Handicap, six furlongs, at the Wanganui meeting, which she won by a narrow margin from Royal Parade and Melissa. Equitant is engaged at the Wanganui spring meeting next month, and if produced at her beet should go well.
