DAYLIGHT SAVING.
In England with standard time it is light until ten o'clock in tlie evenings during die summer ,time. Yet in spite of this tliey have daylight 1 saving, which comes into force automatically every summer, extending the period of daylight for an extra hour. We in New Zealand, where it is dark at 7.30 in the evenings during the summer, have to be content with half an hour, which gives us daylight till eight o'clock. In England it is daylight till eleven in the evening. We have to put up with half an hour because a few farmers complain they cannot get their children to sleep in the daylight. When I was in England last summer the farmers told me they never had trouble with their children. They go to bed in daylight, anyhow, whether the extra hour ■ is in force or not. The extra hour of is a settled thing in England, and has been in force for many years, and they will never go back on it. Why, then, cannot we have, one extra hour of daylight instead of the paltry half hour given to us last summer? The lateness of our summers, rain falling'practically up to the end of February every year, entitles us to the extra hour of sunshine when there is a chance of having it. "The farmer, his wife and children lead an open-air life and are strong and healthy. We in the towns are cooped up in' shops and offices all day. Why cannot farmers' wives be more charitable and give us a chance to get out in the open air while it is yet daylight, and give the greatest <rood to. the greatest number? SUNSHINE.
