FUTURE WORLD.

The time is coming, scientists and men of progress tell us, when the earth and the universe Avill be bent to do man's bidding. In spite of tremendous obstacles and many reverses, it is the laboratory that will emerge conqueror and Nature will be subjected. Rain will fall only when the experts judge it necessary for the land. The lightning will be harnessed and the electric energy released in the heavens stored up on earth to drive factories and .-trains. Life will be prolonged to Methuselahlian proportions. Human organs regulated like machinery, life in those future days will be a masterpiece of clockwork, in which everything is studied, foreseen and calculated. It will be an age when there will be no more fatherlands, no more parties, no creeds; just facts. The earth will be fertilised chemically and fruit and greens will grow in a few hours at the behest of all-conquering man with his marvel--lous machinery. All things will move with method and automatic rationalism. No effort necessary any longer, no suffering either; just let yourself drift along. It will be an amazing world, full of marvels of science and invention. And yet— and yet one feels that some of the ancients of days in those extraordinary times of the future will sit down as they remember the past and weep over life, because humanity will be without iov and the world will have lost its soul.
