SCRAMBLE IN MUD.
NOTHING SPECTACULAR.
As can be expected under such conditions as prevailed at Eden Park on Saturday, the football in the curtainraiser was not of a sensational character.. The most that can be said of the Auckland B-Soutli Auckland match is that it was closely contested. Auckland B scored two tries to the visitors' one
goal. The greasy ball was not easy to handle, but 'on occasions the Auckland backs indulged in pleasing passing' bouts, throwing the ball: about with almost dry-day precision. Bush was always safe as the last line of defence, and handled the slippery, oval excellently. Cammick, Wales and Weir combined well, and gave their dashing wingers a good deal of the ball. The match, however, was mostly a struggle among the forwards, and the Auckland pack showed up to advantage against their opponents. Big and burly, Kabu was always in the thick of the fray, pushing with all his might. Hardie gave him good support, as did Heyward and Barnes. Indeed, there' were no "passengers" in the vanguard, and all worked with a will. Lawrie was perhaps the best of the visitors' backs, but was ably seconded by Cossey and Wood. Hiud was generally safe, but gave Connolly one try with an extremely weak clearing kick. Keary and Perfect were prominent in the forward line, but the others worked hard and allowed the locals no easy moments. HTJRUNUI-APANUi SHIELD.
