ECONOMY COMMISSION.

WELLINGTON, Thursday,
The Railway Commission,' which: is investigating the finances and .organisation of the Railway Department, will arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday morning for the purpose of inspecting the Addington workshops. The.commission will leave for Dunedin at-midday, and take evidence on the following day in connection with' branph railways and matters submitted by Southland witnesses. The Hillside workshops will;be visitfed on Friday, • and further evidence will be heard in the evenings and also on Saturday. The commission v.?;will leave Dunedin on Sunday night for Christchurch, and. complete the taking of evidence on the following day. The chairman of the commission.-.the Hon, R. Masters, M.L.C., informed .{the "Star" correspondent that the ' limitation of time imposed on members, owing to the necessity of presenting the report to the Government by September, ..lias made it impossible for the - Commission to visit a wider area than 'that, indicated. Invercargill, for instance, had .to be excluded, but witnesses from that area were invited to attend at Dunedin. The same methods v liad to be adopted in the North Island. The. Auckland sittings were attended bv witnesses from Tauranga Opotiki, the Waikato, Thames and North Auckland, and the Wellington evidence included witnesses [from Taranaki. : ' .'
