FENCES AND VIEWS.
May I suggest that the ordinary ratepayer would take a much greater interest in HOMII Bay if only the magnificent view that anight be had from Remuera Road was not obscured by high fences. This probably is done thoughtlessly on the part of the property owners who are seeking to have privacy, but they themselves are comparatively seldom in their guldens, and, when they are, are doing nothing they might be ashamed of and that tliev do not want the general public to see. An Englisliman's home is his castle, and most of us like to put a big wall round, but in Canada and the United States this idea is being go rid of; in Toronto recently I saw whole streets with not a fence in front of the houses; it an looked very well and 110 one is in the habit of standing and staring into the gardens.
