POSTAL INCONVENIENCES.

May I suggest the time has arrived, for the P. and T. Department to provide more facilities for the general public at the main post office with regard to writing cubicles? It is impossible at times to find any place at which one may write a letter card and it is a common sight to see people walking round and round in a vain search for a place to write in comfort. It would appear advisable to do

away with the present system of cubicles built around posts and have them arranged in long lines somewhat similar to those in Wellington. I feel sure that hundreds of people will "bear out the above statement in regard to difficulty in*finding writing room. Some of the present cubicles are far too big and could be almost divided again, even if the Department does not approve of the straight line of cubicles (back- to back) that ,1 advocate. And would it not be a good plan for the Department to :make more public the fact that all letters over one ounce in weight are not accepted at the one penny rate. I feel sure that the majority of people outside the big business houses do not know of this restriction, and as the post office is exceedingly keen to collect double deficient postage at the other encl for even slightly over-weight letters, it would be a good plan to advertise the fact more.' Any business firm in Auckland-will vouch that. 'letieient postage is a big item and it would be interesting to,know what is the average sum paid at the Auckland G.P.O. daily by b>x holders to cover deficient postage. Finally, as I notice the post office is paying well, I would suggest that a clearance be made on Sundays for Main Trunk mails at all suburban offices. I think this service was given s-orae years ago. At present a letter posted ou Saturday night, say, at Devonport post o.'ikv, addressed to Wellington, will not reach its destination until Tuesday, as the only'clearanee of mail is at the Auckland central post office.
