A THREATENED BEACH.

Though the waterfront road is a development that has been before the public for a long while, many of our readers will be surprised to learn that in the plan proposed by the City Council it involves interference with a large portion of the Kohimarama beach. The deputation that waited on the Council last night is prepared to consent to the road encroaching on part of the beach, but it objects to what it regards as the sacrifice of the best part of it. We are sure the public elsewhere will support this protest. The Kohimarama beach, like others about Auckland, is an asset for the general public, and if its value is to' be seriously lessened this is a matter of general concern. That Auckland has permitted its waterfront to be injured so much is all the more reason why what is left should be carefully preserved. We are inclined to think that the Kohimarama protesters" are too modest in their programme, and that it would be better if traffic went round the back of the settlement instead of across its front. We doubt whether bathing will be very pleasant with a main highway between the sea and the houses. However, the Council should at least give very careful consideration to the case put forward by the deputation, Auckland is not so plentifully supplied with good beaches near the city that it can afford to run the risk of spoiling another.
