THE OPENING EVENT.

INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP,

In a field of IS, .with- a number oi young trotters; on the limit, the chance? of the back division in the Introductory Handicap do not look 'rosy. • Ambition Fifa, Midland, Tamahine, White Satin and the Australian Home' Voyage are a formidable lot oil the limit, and the best of them may be White Satin, Fifa and Midland,. . Ambition is likely to begin too slowly,., but. the Dunedin-trained trotter has a fine turn of-speed-. The Nortl Islander Tamahine is a quick beginner and she may race better than in hei previous efforts. - "Of those further back in .the handicap Herbihvyn, if he has improved in stamina, will keep the field busy. Those that read T}est are WHITE SATIN ~.. -FIFA' • ■■ ' ■ : . ' " ' MiDLAND." ' The Advance Handicap. The Advance Handicap, a new race on the club's programme,;.a mile..and ;a quarter event for-, four-yeai'-olds,; has an acceptance of eleven. Morrison, Pre Rata, George Rev and Sodium, on the limit, will keep the rest of the field busy. Morrison is such a smart beginner thati'rhis cliances'v'are likely to be favoured. Southern-owned Captain Wrack; on :12yds, is but lie'may not see out Pointer who has been doing go'od" work on, the track, is likely to be solidly supported as will ,Glenrossie, who, on the same mark, should race well. Royal Silk and Ngingo Ngingo are on 48yds, and tlu former will probably receive most sap port. The placings may be ' ERIN'S POINTER •" MORRISON,: " PRORATA; ; • The August,-Handicap. There is a field" of twelve In the August Handicap, the chief: two-mile cvenl, with five on .the -limit. 0. E Hooper had .King Pointerpaind, Great Logan engaged,' but the latter has beer preferred, and although he is hardly a proved stayer, for the class he must have a chance. Omaha's recent performances have not been good, but some months ago he went a very fast two miles, and if he reproduces that form he will have the race at his mercy. Muriel' ele Ore may fine! the track against her, bul Pageant, although he has been off the scene for some time, is a rare gooel pacei on heavy tracks, arid a fine stayer. Thi Asliburton representative, Pluto has been racing in improved form lately ane looks like returning to his best efforts Of the . five Pluto, Great Logan . anc Muriel dft Oro should show up best. Har vest Ghilel and Zenith are on 12yds."' Tin * former is improving, .while the latter ii not yet solid enough for,the distance ane the class. Jean McElwyn, who lias beei mo.st consistent, should■ beat Bonnj Logan, on (the 24yds' mark. Linkmai seems ; certain to race well on'36yds, bu Dundas-;Boy : ' can 1 hardly bexready for i hard two-mile effort." Imprint is part'ia to heavy' going and will probably beaj Dundas Boy off the same mark. Thi best backeel may be '■ ■ . HARVEST CHILD." ■ V;: ♦ linkman 'JEAN McELWYN.'' r .. f ' ' The Trial Handicap. TOiere is naturally a large field in thi slow ctess two-mile, event, • the Tria Handicap, but many of those engagec have little claim to consideration ovei this distance. Of those on the .limil Apex, who . has elone well . during the winter, appeals strongly, as Mercjirj and the North Islander Hostess/ Wild Voyage and Royal Silk should both beat Nelson McElwyn * off 12yds;. Regal Voyage, who is a rare good stayer, seems to be the pick of the. 24yds division, whiie Country King, Shady Spot and Teremoa, on 36yds, are a dangerotis trio. The final placings may be " . R KGAL VOYAGE '' ' M '■ ROYAL'SILK : 'ft < ' TEREMOA. Stewards' Handicap: w •There-is'.quite.a, good lot of trotters in the Stewards' Handicap. New Metforcl will probably be favourite, and judged bv his recent performances he will take a lot of beating off. the) limit.-: JoclcRingen, although lie has improved over the distance, still fails somewhat in the concluding stages, whilst Quickfire is none too steaely. Rose Audo, on 12yds, is staying much better than formerly* but Writer, on 36yd£ s should beat her. Ukulele Lady can see out the distance, and so can Sarsaparilla, but the finish may be between !. NEW METFORD 1 ' WRITER-v . " UKULELE' LADY. *» The Queen Mary Handicap/' The 4.35 class'eS-dnt, th<i v Handicap, may bq one of the' best': races of the day, as/there are a number of improving papers ...'engaged. Therdfis a strong ejuartet- in-Gailg Awa', Invader, Neeoro, and 'oiV' the' limit, and possibly Neeoro and invader may prove to be the best of them. Wakataua should .beat Grand Light off 12yds; ir fact, the Methven-trained slioiilc be one of the hardest-tobeat in the race John Noble and Kid Logan . may fine the distance beyond .'theiii, and ~off tin same mark Wrackcen reads better. Ariki toa and Erin's Fortune are a hot pair oi 30yds, and each should show up prominently. Harold Logan, who raced so wel in the latter part of last season, it reported to be troubled with splints, ane may not be at his best. Logan's Pride on 48yds, has the time test Jais favour

and the Wellington-trained pacer looks in good shape. It should be a very fine contest, and the finish may be fought out between WAKATAUA ' ERIN'S FORTUNE NEEORO. The Selwyn Handicap. There is a field of 17 in the mile and a quarter event, the Selwyn Handicap, with Lindbergh and Jolly Pet on the back mark, which is only 24yds. Nine are on the limit. Rey Logan, who raced well but unluckily "at the end of last season, reads well, while Rolex, Royal Comrade and Warplane are others who seem to possess good chances. Eugene de Oro is partial to the distance, and has been working well. Tony Victor is coming back to his best form, while Dilnon improved a good deal during last season. C. S. Donald has a strong trio in Lindbergh, Tony Victor and Dilnon in the race. The final placings. may be EUGENE DE ORO DONALD'S BRACKET WARPLANE. v .. The International Handicap. ' There are 23 acceptances for the mile harness event, the International Handicap, and there will be some trouble at the start with such a large field beginning oil a bend. Morning Sun and Final McKinney should go a fast mile off the end of the handicap. Muriel de Oro Vendome and Arikitoa may show up well off 12yds; in fact, Vendome, who is a quick beginner, will probably be favourite. There are some fast horses on the back marks, but they will find some difficulty in getting a position in the large field. Bessie Logan, King Pointer; Native Prince and Author Jinks should all race well with a good passage. Much will depend on the start, but the favourites may^be - . . VENDOME MURIEL DE ORO , . - ARIKITOA. The''acceptances are:— -M QK — INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP X-L.OU ' of . 3uosovs. One mile and a half. Limit 3.32. Ambition . .' Lt. Trampcrisp , 12 Fifa . . Lt.
