GRAND NATIONALS.

the opening day.

LIST OF ACCEPTORS

SINE IN STEEPLECHASE,

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") . CHRIST CHURCH, Thursday. The final payments and acceptances received to-night give an assurance of good fields for the Grand National meeting which will be commenced at Riccarton on Tuesday. The total is seven short of last year, but the Cashmere Plate is responsible for six, and with eighteen horses engaged it still claims a big field. The comparative figures for the other events are as follows, last year's /being criven in parentheses: —Grand National Steeplechase, 0 (8); Winter Cup, 23 (20); Grand National Hurdles, 15 (15); Hunters' Hurdles, 9 (!)); Trial Hurdles, 8 (9); Jumpers' Fiat Handicap, 11 (15); Enfield Steeplechase, 9 (7); Avon head Handicap, 17 (19). Of the fifteen horses who made the first acceptance for the Grand National Steeplechase, Mangani, Nukumai, Ilymestrason. Radiate, Flying Swift and Seaboy dropped out at the final payment, leaving a field of nine. The list is subject to possible defections yet, but there should remain material for a good contest. There are two Riccarton candidates in the Grand National Steeplechase field, Lord Ranald and Whariicliffe, both from T. H. Gillett's stable. Neither of the pair is sound, but they pulled up all right after a gallop this morning, and if they go on all right they will take their places at the post on Tuesday. Two of the other acceptors claim other engagements on the same day, Omco being in the Jumpers' Flat Handicap, and Corncroff in the Enfield Steeplechase. Mangani and Nukumai, who were allowed to drop out of the Grand National Steeplechase, will not be racing on Tuesday, but they are likely contestants on the second day for the Grand National Hurdles, a race in which each of them has a win to his credit. Wharncliffe, another Grand National Hurdle winner, is also engaged again, while he figures in the "big steeplechase on the opening day. Aurora Borcalis, Omeo and Wharncliffe are a trio still eligible to run for the Grand National double. ' "Silver Paper is the only notable defection from the Winter Cup, and the twenty-three horses left in make up a very strong field. Four horses, who were iriciuded among the first acceptors for the Grand National Hurdles —Lancers, Amorist, Apache and Radiate —have dropped out, leaving an excellent field of fifteen. Mister Gamp, Nukumai, Mam gani, Pangolin, Craigmorc, Mountain Guide and Jen, or nearly half the candidates, will not be seep on the first day, arc:— HUNTERS' HURDLES of 250sovs. One mile and three-quarters.
