SMASH ON SOUTH ROAD.

DRIVER ESCAPES WITH CUTS.

One man was killed'instantly and another had an .astonishing escape when a three-seater motor/car crashed into a telegraph post on the' Auckland' side of a bridge crossing.the Takahini Stream at Mahia, on the. Great South. Road, on Saturday night. , '.'■■..'■ Mr. Charles Berry Simons, aged 36, a jeweller, of Taumarunui, was killed. Mr. Robert John Burling, a'farmer, 'of Piriaka, near Taumarunui, was badly shaken and was cut over the eye by flying glass. The accident happened, about ten o'clock. The car, which was being:driven to Auckland, : left the ■ concrete after crossing .th.e. brjdge, where the road takes a turn tn ,th.e. .right., With considerable' force the side of the car struck the telegraph pole, which is about eight feet from the edge of the road, and one side of "the car was, completely torn away. After swinging sideways,, the. car stopped on the concrete a few yards' further on. Mr. Simons-was flung out on the concrete. , ■ ■' Mr. L. Rose, who was driving a bus from Pukekohe to Auckland, was the first passer-by. He called Dr. C. C. Jenkins, of Manure wa, and Constable Maloney, of Otaliulm. The doctor found that Mr. Simons had a fractured skull and fractures of the left arm. and leg. The motorists had left Taumarmnvi about eight o'clock, and stopped at Hamilton to watch the British Rugby team.play the Waikato. After the match they resumed,their trip : to Auckland. . - There have been several smashes at the spot where the' accident happened. The last one was about ,two months-ago. In nearly all cases the same telegraph pole was involved. After the last crash tho pole was painted white to make it easier to see at night, andthe Auckland Automobile Association put up a warning signpost. The bridge mentioned is on the boundary of the Manukau County and the Manurewa Town Board's district. Mr. Simons went to live, in Taumarunui about six years ago.
