GRAPE CRISIS.
NIGHT-RIDERS , THREATS.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 18.
California's grape industry, alleged to be worth £100,000,000, faces a crisis, as a campaign to sign up 85 per cent of growers- in a Farm Board relief programme, is on the verge of failure. Nightriders nroved through one vineyard area terrifying non-signers. The Fresno County sheriff's office responded to two calls, from grapegrowers, asking for protection from mobs attempting to force their signatures ' to Federal Grape Control Board contracts.
The drive to sign 85 per cent, or more than 500,000 acres, of vineyards, fell short of the quota by 80,000 acres.
