"JUMPED OVERBOARD."
NOTE ON FERRY STEAMER
POLICE SUSPECT A HOAX,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. On the arrival of the ferry steamer Maori at Lyttelton yesterday the chief officer picked up.a wallet behind a deck ventilator. The wallet contained a note: "Jumped overboard .last night," and also a number of accounts addressed to a resident of New Plymouth. The chief steward of the Maori reported that there was no man of the name mentioned on the accounts on board on Tuesday night. No inquiries have been received regarding the person supposed to be missing.
The police liave the matter in hand, but believe it to be a hoax.
