CONFERENCE IN CHINA,

WELLINGTON, Wednesday,
An indication of the extent of the research work being done, by .the Jijetir tute of Pacific Relations was given at a meeting of the National Council of the New Zealand group,. Sir James Allen presiding. Sir Apirana Ngata,' who' was, present with Mr, Balneavis, secretary of the Maori Purposes Board, stated that the board believed the institute was doing good work in the interests of the Maori race, and had decided to make.'a contribution of £50 per year for five years. ... It Avas reported that steps were being taken for tho formation of a. branch of the institute at Napier and it was resolved to approve of the suggestion, and, if possible, arrange for a member of the council to attend the inaugural meeting. ■ .•' •
■ Professor Belshaw, of Auckland, wrote that owing to financial stringency it was unlikely that the Auckland University Council could raise the necessary amount against a grant from • headquarters for land utilisation research, a. project which was accordingly irr abeyance. /
A small committee was set up to'cooperate with the Maori Purposes Board in controlling research as regards the effect of civilisation on the Maori people and the people of tho Cook Islands. Auckland will devote Itself to' the Samoan side of the study, and it is hoped that the southern groups will collaborate. It was agreed'to-fall 'in with the suggestion that the next conference, which will be held in China, shall be in 1931, instead of 1932.
