WANGANUI WIN.
MATCH IN TIMARU.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
TIMARU, Wednesday.
The Wanganui Rugby team opened its South Island tour with a match against South Canterbury to-day and won by 13 points to 8 after a very poor display. The weather was dull but fine and there was no wind. The ground was rather soft. Both teams were composed of comparatively young players, but few of them showed anything like representative form. Thus standard of play, in fact, was decidedly poor and the margin of points about represented the merits of the teams on the day. The visitors appeared to have a slight advantage in weight in the forwards, and while they had slightly- the better of the tight play the home side was superior in the loose and in the line-outs. While fresh the visitors made the pace fast, but neither side was in a condition to last out a solid game. The home forwards did not play well In the loose in the early stages, but improved considerably later and gave the visiting backs no respite. The Wanganui backs handled the ball fairly well, but solid tackling quickly stopped many promising movements.,
