ONLOOKER'S VIEWPOINT.

SATURDAY'S. MATCH.

A correspondent, William dlill, writes in reference to Saturday's game: —"It was the first big match in Auckland that was absolutely under control of the referee and he must be a man of exceptional pluck. Once the game came perilously close to a donnybrook affair, but he quickly gained control again." The writer adds that he saw certain players on both sides get out of control, "but luckily the referee's firm action brought ttem up with a round turn." The writer also commends the British captain's action in interceding on Knight's behalf, though the referee declined to alter his decision.

"Aucklander" -writes: "I think in fairness to our visitors, appreciation of their intercession with the referee should be known.. While the player was leaving the field one of the British players notified their captain, who immediately appealed to have him brought back. Although unavailing, it showed the true sporting spirit"
