NOTES FROM SOUTH.

AWAY GIVEN AWAY.

EL DIRECT IN STEADY WORK.

HORSES. AT > NEW BRIGHTON.

(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

The owner of the pacer Away has presented him to his last trainer, A. G. Wilson, of New Brighton, and the Adonis gelding is now running out in a paddock. Wilson is undecided regarding the future of Away, but the pacer is not likely to stand a solid preparation. After, racing with success in the South as a young horse, Away went into E. C. McDermott's stable and was trained at Addington. At that time he was one of the most promising pacers in commission. Unfortunately, he became fractious at the barrier, but McDermott devoted a lot of time to him and eventually Away became a good beginner. He then showed his worth, racing successfully over all distances and subsequently qualifying for ■ the New Zealand Cup. During the early spring before the New Zealand Cup of 1920 no horse was showing better form in training than Away, who had improved considerably and was pacing exceptionally well without hopples. One morning in October McDermott gave Away a fast workout over two miles in view of his cup training. I was on the track and saw the performance, which was good enough to give the pacer a great chance in the big race. After pulling up, McDermott jokingly said, "Have you seen anything in work likely to win the cup?", which brought forth the reply, "Won't you be hard ?" McDermott took Away to be cooled off, and returning in about half an hour, said, "Away has broken down, and I don't think lie will start." Unfortunately such proved to be the case, and Away never become sound again. McDermott sent him to A G. Wilson to be worked on the softer track at New Brighton, but although he has been patched up lie is too bad to be got fit for a two-mile race. The Taranaki-owned pacer. El Direct has almost recovered from the injury he suffered recently and is in steady work again at New Brighton in A.'G. Wilson's charge. S. A. Edwards started as a public trainer,'and is'gradually getting a useful 1 team together. He is training his team at New Brighton. J. N. Clarke is working a useful looking two-year-old by Guy Parish from Winnipeg. 1 The youngster goes at the pacing gait. Tho pacer Brentelly is at present out of training, but another start will be made with her in a few weeks. A. G. Wilson lias a useful sort of trotter in work by El Carbine from Meritorious, who was bred in the Taranaki district. She is a three-year-old and a half-sister to another trotter trained at New Brighton by D. M. "Robertson—a two-year-old by. Worthy Bingen from Meritorious.
