Tlio Australian-bred colt by Top Gallant from Princess Ilona is doing well undy Geo. Holland's care at headquarters. He lias been allotted several sprinting tasks recently and is shaping encouragingly, considering the short time he has been in work.

During the past few weeks the maiden candidate Thunderstorm lias been showing marked improvement in. his track work at Ellerslie. This half-brother to Airtight is also in better condition than ever he has previously been, and his owner, H. Rama, expects him to pay his way during the new season.

Several of the local juveniles were 6printed on the No. 3 grass track at Ellerslio during the week-end. They were not required to do their best, and those that pleased most were Bonny Lea, Hawthorne and the Top Gallant colt in Geo. Holland's stable.

Freyja and Twinkler both gave creditable jumping displays over the steeplechase fences on the flat at Ellerslie last Saturday morning. These two candidates for hunters' events will be seen out at the Pakuranga meeting next month, and by the time that meeting arrives they should be in good racing fettle.

The Catmint—Merry Times mare Cat-i-mes, in A. Julian's stable, has made good progress during the past month. She was giren a run along over four furlongs on the No. 3 grass track at Ellerslie last Saturday morning and shaped well. This mare is built on very solid lines, and when properly seasoned should pay her way.

Autumn Sun, who registered two placed performances on the concluding day of the Gisborne meeting, is a tliree-year-old gelding by Autumn from Sabine. He won a maiden race at Opotiki last March, but has done little racing since then. He is a brother to Autumina and is likely to do better with more racing experience.

H. Rama is keeping Wild Country up to the mark, and the Antagonist filly is thriving on the work allotted her. She will be in first-class condition for the Pakuranga meeting next month, and the fact of the 7.0 minimum being in operation for that meeting will be to her advantage.

J. Buchanan has mpst of his charges well forward for the coming season, and it' will not be for want of condition if they fail to win races. Neil has grown and furnished a good deal during the winter, and it would not surprise to find liim displaying improved form during his four-year-old career.

Valuator, winner of the Waihao Handicap at the Waimate Hunt meeting last Saturday,, is a six-year-old gelding by Kangitero from Heather. Ho is owned by Mr. P. Delargey and first came under notice when he won the Trial Stakes at the Oamaru autumn meeting in March last.

By winning in his first two attempts over steeplechase country, Kalakaua has done well and more is likely to be heard of him in the future. The Demosthenes gelding recently showed up prominently in hurdle races at the Napier Park meeting, and now that he has shown ability over the big fences more successes should come his way.

Town Major, who came into prominence at Trentham when he won the Te Aro and Seatoun Hack Handicaps, and was just beaten by Taboo in the Winter Oats, was not entered for the Winter Cup, but ho is engaged in minor flat events at the Grand National meeting. He won well at the Waimato Hunt meeting on Saturday and should bo hard to beat at Riccarton next month.

Night Effort, who was second to Town Major at the Waimate Hunt meeting on Saturday, is a four-year-old filly by Night Raid from Effort, a really good performer in her day and one of the bestnamed horses in New Zealand, for she is by Advance from Endeavour. Night Effort won a couple of races last season— the Trial Plate at Waimate and the Hack Handicap at Oamaru. She has not succeeded in scoring this season.

In his three starts at the Gisborne meeting Valsier displayed marked consistency by registering a win, a second and a third. When trained at Ellerslie Yalsier showed good galloping ability, but did not appear to do his best in the big fields that he met here. Since going to Gisborne he has won a number of races, and this is probably due to the fact that the fields have been small in most races that he has contested.

Arrowmir only commenced racing after a spell at the Waimate Hunt meeting on Saturday and lie won the Morven Handicap. Like all the Arrowsmith tribe, Arrowmir possesses more than average pace. Last season he won two events and was placed on five other occasions. This season he has contested twenty-four races for six wins, five seconds and four thirds. His dam, Lady Vladimir, was a very useful sort when racing.

King March, who won at Moorefield on Saturday, showed some promise when he ran third to Green Linnet and Love Song in the Victoria Handicap, six furlongs, at the Auckland autumn meteing, which was his best effort in the Dominion. He is by Rossendale from Queen March, a good performer in her day, and, seeing that the distance was a mile on Saturday, he will now enter into calculations for the A.J.C. Derby.

Included in the entries for the Maiden Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt meeting is Swiftray, a rising four-year-old gelding by Arrowsmith from Sungleam. He is owned by Mr. G. D. Greenwood and is trained at Riccarton by R. J. and P. V. Mason. Swiftray has contested fourteen races during the current season and has only two placed performances to liis credit, both being gained in minor events in the South. This gelding is also freely engaged in hack races at the Grand National meeting and may reach the winning list at-that fixture.
