THAMES COUNTY.
ENGINEER REPORTED ILL. SUBSIDY FOR TAIRUA WHARF. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES SOUTH, this day. The Thames County Council met yesterday, Mr. H. Lowe presiding. Prior to the opening of the meeting the chairman reported the illness of the engineer, Mr. J. Higgins, and the council passed a resolution expressing appreciation of his services and the hope that he Avould soon recover. The Ohinemuri County Council notified that it would raise no objections to its ratepayers taking water from the Thames County water supply. Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., wrote re the council's resolution urging the Government to increase the petrol tax that the matter would receive-earnest consideration when it came before Parliament. A lengthy circular from .the Highways Council re subsidies for road maintenance work and methods to be adopted in connection with gravel roads was referred to the engineer. The council decided to join adjacent counties in the appointment of a highways inspector. A telegram was received from the Minister of Public Works announcing a subsidy of £250 for the Tairua wharf. This was received with appreciation, and the council decided to send'a letter thanking the Minister for his assistance. In reference to the unsatisfactory state of the Mata Bridge on the main Thamee-Coromandcl highway it was decided to bring the matter before the Highways Board.
