PAPATOETOE INTERESTS.
With a view to the future _ linking up of the suburban railway services and road and air transport routes, the Railway Department is being urged to approve the Mangere site as an Auckland airport. Mr. S. J. E. Closey, president of the Papatoetoe Welfare League, and a member of the body sponsoring the Mangere site, reported, at the league's last meeting that steps were being taken to secure the support of the Railway Department. The Mangere site was approved as a landing field for commercial aeroplanes by Cadbury's, Ltd., owners of the first commercial aeroplane in New Zealand.
The league adopted the slogan, "Halfhour trips every half-hour" as defining its attitude to the suburban railway services between Papatoetoe and Auckland, and decided to ask the Department to provide shorter, more frequent and faster trains under the new timetable, now being prepared. Onehunga's action in putting forward a proposal for the industrial replanning of Auckland was endorsed, and it was decided to support the united movement of. the Onehunga Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, and other bodies in recommending Auckland industrial concerns to consider sites in the vicinity of the Manukau foreshore when arranging to establish their plants outside 1 the citjr area.
