Smith will not race Ills imported horse, Antonia Direct, at the meeting. He has not been able to give the pacer sufficient work to enable him to race in anything like form. Hohoro, who was never a good one, is doing steady work at Otahuhu, but he does not appeal as a likely winner at the! meeting. He is on 72yds in a 3.36 class' on Saturday, and this would not give him any chance of winning. At her best Benefice is a good mare, hut it is questionable whether the bay daughter of Rev de Oro is at the top of her form just now. In a workout one daylast week with Woodvale and Gold Jacket she did not finish at all well. J. Gee will have Anseline and Maid of the Mountains racing for him at the ■ Auckland meeting. The pair look well and have done a fair amount of work. Anseline appears to be the better proposition of the two, as Maid of the Mountains has failed too often to encourage one to support her. The fact that J. T. Paul will drive Gold Jacket on Saturday in the Cornwall Handicap will get the Gold Bell gelding solid backing. Gold Jacket is a brilliant pacer, but 60yds is a good start to give away to horses like Warplane and Bey Logan in a mile. He should not be able to give Wilma Dillon 36yds. It was just as well for Auckland! owners who have horses in the Provincial Trot nest Saturday that Home Voyage won at Ashburton on Saturday. He went 4.41 1-5, winning easily, and at Auckland was handicapped on 4.50. However he has now been penalised five seconds, which brings him from 24yds to 84yds, or a 4.45 mark. Sunshower's failure to get a place in th« County Handicap at Ashburton would not suggest she has a chance on Saturday in the Mark Memorial, but it may not be safe to count her right out, as she was on 60yds at Ashburton, and it is always hard to win from such a mark. At Auckland she is on 36yds, but it may be found she is better over a shorter journey than two miles. I": Trustworthy has been somewhat of .a disappointment this season, and unless she improves considerably on her form she has not much chance of getting any money this week-end. On Saturday she is on S4yda in a 3.36 mile and a half* and her prospects are not encouraging, particularly when there are horses out or near the front of the handicap who have gone seconds faster than they are handicapped to do. Linkman is reported to be going well in his training work at Addington. His form at the Canterbury Park meeting early this month shows that he is right at tiie top of his form, and, though Great Peter and Logan's Pride will probably be preferred to him in the Mark Memorial on Saturday, Linkman is a brilliant pacer, and one who can act in any going. He was withdrawn from his engagement at Ashburton on Saturday, which suggests his owlier fancies his chance at Auckland. Mountain Dell's workout over a mile and a half on Saturday morning, when she covered the journey in 3.26, .was a very impressive effort, as the track was not fast. The daughter of Blue Mountain King is back to her best form, and no doubt will be well supported in her engagements at the meeting which opens on Saturday. She is engaged in _ the Marconi Handicap, being on 36yds in a 2.51 class. That she can muster up a fine turn of speed there is no question, hut, even so, she is going to find it difficult to give 12yds to Harold Logan and Country King if they line up at the post. Harold Logan has gone a shade worse than 3.19 for a mile and a half, and you cannot give much start to horses of that class, while Country King has gone a mile in 2.13 1-5 and a mile and a half in 3.21 4-5.
