INDECENT ASSAULT AT

HUNTLY.

VERDICT OF GUILTY.

A youth of, 25 years named Robert Arthur Samways, for whom Mr. W, Noble appeared, was charged, before his Honor Mr. Justice Herdman and a. jury at the Hamilton Supreme Court yesterday, with an indecent assault at Huntly. Constable Leslie said that on. the way to Auckland on the train, prisoner, who had previously denied the charge, remarked that if he had not had some drink "'it would not have happened." A companion of Samways named Joseph Shannon, said the alleged offence could not have taken place in the short time he and Samvvny.? were separated. A verdict of guilty was returned. Sentence was postponed. Samways was sentenced to reformative detention not exceeding three years.

His Honor said prisoner had commenced a career of crime with eight convictions for house breaking in 1019. There were other convictions for.theft and mischief, and it was difficult to know what to do with prisoner, who was still a youth.
