GANG SCARE.

CHICAGO IN PERIL. Urgent Need of " Cleaning Up" the City, INVITATION TO DAWES. (United P.A.-Electric Telegraph-Copyright) CHICAGO.. June 15. It is understood that the Association of Commerce, which'represents 200.000 prominent citizens, will address an appeal to Mr. C. G. Dawes, Ambassador in Loudon, to assume the leadership of an attempt to clean up the vicious conditions in what has been termed "Chicago's direst hour of need.'' Mr. Dawes is looked upon as the idea! man to captain the forces of society, and destroy the city's underworld menace. Some hope is held of his acceptance of the post, in view of the fact that he will direct the work in 193.') of the Chicago World's Pair. A meeting will be held on Monday of the directing heads of the various civic and private bodies, for mapping out the campaign against gang lawlessness, and it is believed that an invitation to Mr. Dawes may then be issued. Chicago founds a ''Hall of 111 Fame," witli twenty-eight ■'niches of iniquity." and nominates for those places as "public enemies" some of its most conspicuous pang leaders and all-round hoodlums. This astounding "Who's Who of ({kingdom''' was recently published by" the Chicago Crime Commission, composed of and set up by loading citizens, in a now assault on organised outlawry. "For ten years the men named have been officiated with bootlegging, bombing, racketeering, and labour domination,''' says the commission, "and they include the heads of the various gangs." Handing the names to the police. Prank J. Locsch, commission president. outlines a campaign of harassing gangsters: Vigilant watchfulness and arrests. court action, deputation of criminal aliens, investigation %o determine whether personal property taxes have been paid by these persons, investigation of the status of their real estate holdings and the taxes paid thereon, inquiry a* to whether'or not they have paid their United ' States income taxes. In a first-pass article "The Daily News" points out that the official list contains some "notable omissions," which it then proceeds to supply. It is the third roll, of "gunmen, gang slayers, and all-round hoodlums" printed by this paper within three months. "Despite frequent public demands that they be exiled. 7 ' the paper states, "the racketeers are still doing business at the old stand."
