MORTGAGEES.
I As a mortgagee I must protest against your correspondent's description of the mortgagee. as an "old man of the sea" who sits triumphant on the shoulders of the producer. The producer need not borrow money unless he likes, but if he does the money is not his but the lender's and he should not complain if he. has to pay the current rate of interest. Not long ago complaints were made that other investments were so attractive that people did not care to lend money to farmers. Such letters as "Man in the Street's" do not encourage; them to do so.
