BOWLING

PUKEKOHE. CLUB.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

CHALLENGES GOING ROUND

(By TRUNDLER.)

:, Bowlers struck b'ea'utiful weather -oh Saturday, with the greens in nice order after three fine days, so a full pro-

gramme was carried out,

v Hillsboro' lost the Denison Pins-to a Ponsonby. team in charge of J. Pick, who alhplayed a splendid game, whereas the holders . could, not reproduce, the form that, they showed in:their two previous matches against Dominion, Road and Auckland. . Carbines, Hill, Jury and Diclj: made a very strong combination; but next Saturday • the skip is .passing the trophies over to his third, so that he caii play for the Edwin Stars. Jury will therefore meet-L. Russell (Remuera) 1 , but the personnel of the challenging team, is not announced.

The West End holders of' the Edwin Stars were, without the assistance of their skip, I. Clarke, on: Saturday, as he had met with a slight accident. However, his third filled the breach, the rink being arranged in this order: Horsley, Wynyard, Brookes, C. E. Hardley. For the first few heads it was mostly left for the skip to hold it up, but the team soon got going, and at' one time they were leading by 21 to 2. The Dominion Road challengers had no hope whatever, striking West End when the latter were all at the top of their form, and although Kelly occasionally showed some of his Usual brilliance, the game ended with a very heavy margin in favour of the holders.' Next Saturday they will meet Ponsonby, and although the* team is not announced it is sure to be a hot one. It nyty be taken for granted that Ponsonby will' attempt to repeat their last performance,' for it was from West End that they took the Edwin Stars in 1928, when they held them against 14 challenges, until finally they lost them to H. A. Robertson (Onehunga). The Jordan Pins are going round more quickly now, and on Saturday the new holders lost them to a Te Papapa rink (Allcock, Moore, Johnson, Crichton). It was a good game, the result being largely due to Crichton's excellent play. Next Saturday Te Papapa will play L. Bray, J. T. Gill, T. S. Bassett, W. J. Munro (Onehunga), followed by K. Lippiatt (Otahuhu) and J. MaDermott (Ellerslie).

The Press and the Printers played their return match against Auckland* on Saturday, but the local bowlers turned the tables on them very effectively, defeating them by four rinks to one. The new winter green is coming in very useful, for at the same time two tournament finals were being played. The Nomads were snly a small'company on the occasion of their visit to Te Papapa on Saturday, but they spent a very enjoyable afternoon, finding the green even better than its usual good order, as a result of systematic treatment with sulphate of ammonia. The method adopted is to mark out the eight rinks, and give it 2ilb per rink, well mixed into an earth topdressing, this process being repeated every month: At the tea adjournment the visitors were welcomed by the president of the club, Mr. E. Marks, a response being made bv Messrs. J. Whitehouse and J. W. Hardle.Y-

i The retiring president of the Onehunga Bowling Club, Mr. Robert Buchanan, took the opportunity at the green last Saturday to thank the members for .their cordial support during his two years in office, and particularly for their warm expressions of sympathy during his recent illness. He bespoke the same support for the incoming president, and expressed his keen regret at the indisposition of his predecessor in office, Mr. S. H. Davenport. The International Bowling Board. AAs anticipated in this column a. week or two ago, the annual meeting of this great body will be held on the very same day as our own Dominion Council, Wednesday July 9. This certainly emphasises the advisability of our rules being altered to allow our council to hold its meeting a fortnight erfrlier, in order that the latest instructions may be cabled to the twp representatives of the Dominion. The 1.8.8. meetings are held in the four countries of the British Isles in turn, just as our own are held in the.four chief cities in turn, in each case in regular order. This year it is Ireland's turn, and for the first time it will be held in Dublin, whereas it is usually held in Belfast. The usual series., of international matches will take place at the same time, and this should give a great impetus to the game in the Irish Free State, which has always been the most backward part of the British Isles in respect to bowls. The international matches take place on July 9, 10 and 11, five rinks from each of the. four- countries, and they are regarded as the \ event of the year. As showing how seriously these matches are regarded, there was to be a trial match last Saturday, between the Possibles, and the Probables, nominated by the English Counties, and the final twenty are selected after the closest scrutiny. It is esteemed a great honour to be chosen, and those selected are entitled to rank as "Internationals" for life. • The matches have been played annually since the 1.8.8. was formed in 1903, except during the four war years, and in these 23 seasons Scotland won thirteen times, England seven, Wales twice and Ireland once. The fifth annual meeting of the Henderson Bowling Club was held in the Foresters' Hall on Saturday night. About 30 members were ' present,' and the president, Mr. G. Y. Canton, occupied the chair. ' The annual report indicated that the past season had' been a trying one, much play being lost owing to the excessive wet weather, more, ir» fact, than all the other years, put together. Eleven days had been booked for the playing of tournaments, but only one of these had been all that could be, desired. The interrdub matches had also' suffered in the same way, only five out of ten fixtures being carried through. The club singles had been the most popular item of the year; in the final S. Cossey beat I. E. Scott. The club pairs resulted in D. X. McLeod and C. S. Geldard being the winners, with Scott, Wright, Carter and Massey as runners-up. • About 28 games were played in the percentage fours, and. resulted in Scott being in the of skips with 100 per cent wins; the '

runner-up was Higginbotham with 50 per cent; seconds, R. Lawrie and B. Carter tied with 75 per cent each; thirds, G. Melhose, 60 per cent, and H. Norcross, C. S. Geldard and L. A. Bridson, 40 per cent. Pennant games numbered 20, of which eight were w.on and 12 lost. The Pascoe Cup had been won from Glen Eden and lost to Helensville. Only one game was played for the Radaly Cup, which was lost. - For the Pook Stars, three games had been played, Higginbotham's team, consisting of Lawrie, Williams, Massey and Higginbotham, holding the stars for the whole of the season. The balance sheet showed that the receipts for the year amounted to £312 4/1, and the expenditure £299 13/8; leaving a credit balance of £12 10/5. Trophies were presented to the winners.

Messrs. Canton and Chandler were declared life members of the Henderson Club. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. A. Pook; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Wright and H. Norcross; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. F. Chilwell ; green superintendent, Mr. H. Wright; assistant, Mr. G. Melhose; executive committee, Messrs. Higginbotham, Moors, Williams, Bridson and T.
