APPLES AND PEARS.

LONDON MARKET. SOUTH AFRICAN COMPETITION. LONDON, April 24. The first big consignment of pears arrived by the]Tamaroa, but were found to be too ripe for holding and had to be sold off quickly. The following prices were obtained:—Doyen du Cornice, at 4/6 to 6/6 per tray, and boxes 7/ to 11/. _ Keiffers, Capiamonts and Packham's Triumph all sold at 3/6 to 4/ a tray, and Beurre Diels at 4/ a box. These pears have all to face stern competition with the huge consignments of South African pears at present on the market. The Empire Marketing Board reports that "Shipments of deciduous fruits from South Africa, so far advised this season,' excluding pines, amount tb 2,272,156 boxes, compared with 1,431,448 boxes at the corresponding date year, and 1,817,631 boxes in 1928. The next consignment of pears is expected on the Port Caroline, and the Port Brisbane, which arrives next week with fruit for London, is also carrying 40,000 cases apples destined for Hamburg and 2000 cases of pears to be landed for transhipment to the Continent. This will be the first consignment of fruit for the Continent from New Zealand this year.

The Cumberland arrives to-day, but is not yet unloaded. The New Zealand Fruit Board is sending apples to an exhibition at Manchester next week, and immediately following that an exhibition at Belfast. The Empire Marketing Board makes the interesting announcement that Australia and New Zealand are now responsible for much the larger proportion of apples arriving in the United Kingdom.
