OUR RAILWAYS.
(To the Editor.) There seems to be something radically wrong with the management of our railway system, and the only solution is cutting down the fares. Tliey should be cut down to Id per mile single ami vcl return on second-class tickets only, and if people like to pay extra fur first-class let them do so, and all freightshould be cut down. Surely it vite transport and passenger service can make a do of it the tram should be able to do the same. The first step the Government should take is to raise the duty ou petrol. It will be remembered when Sir Joseph Ward brought in the penny postage the majority thought he was 'going to ruin the country, but it panned out trumps, and the same thing could be done with the railways. Anyhow, the - situation could not be muchworse: give it a trial. Take for instance the Sunday trips to Hamilton and Auckland, which are packed both ways, and I am sure it Is the best paying train on the Waikato line. H. H. SISSOXS. ,
