ST. HELENS HOSPITALS..

REMUNERATION OF TUTORS. INCREASE SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) STRATFORD, this day. In reference to a suggestion made by Dr. Henry Jellett, consulting obstetrician of tho Health Department, that some of the surplus fund of the obstetrical endowment appeal be used to, provide remuneration for the medical officeis of the'larger St. Helens hospitals, Dr. Doris Gordon, secretary. of the Obstetrical Society, said that this matter had been discussed at an executive meeting of the society on May 21. The impression seemed to be widespread, she said,Jthat the superintendents of St. Helens hospitals weiw at present giving clinical instruction to students without remuneration, but Sir Lindo Ferguson, dean of the Medical School, had informed the executive of the Obstetrical Society that a small salary for teaching services had been paid to officers of these institutions for the past one or two years.

The executive of the Obstetrical Society considered that the remuneration at present awarded was not proportionate to the work these tutors were doing, and a resolution was therefore passed suggesting to the Otago. University Council that out of the increased revenue henceforth available for obstetrical teaching it should consider increasing the salaries of obstetrical tutors in th* northern St. Helens hospitals, which aiv ndw being used as additional training schools for senior students.
