WOMAN'S PURSE STOLEN.
VEGETABLE HAWKER GAOLED. HID MONEY IN HIS SOCK. Arrested yesterday lor an offence committed nine months ago, Frederick Felix Clay (34), alias Frank Hagin, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning and pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £3 from the dwelling of Annie Mulvihill, on September 15 last.
Clay, said Chief Detective Hammond, was hawking vegetables for another man. He did not have a license himself. He went to Mrs. house, calling at the back door, and while she was in the front room he went into the kitchen and stole lier purse, which contained £3. After Clay had left, Mrs. Mulvihill discovered that the purse had disappeared, and she went out into the street and questioned him about it. After some trouble Clay withdrew the money from his sock. "Mrs. Mulvihill did not report the matter to the police," said Mr. Hammond, "but subsequent complaints resulted in Clay being arrested, when he admitted the present charge. He has a number of previous convictions for . false pretences and vagrancy." After perusing Clay's list, Mr. Hunt consigned him to Mount Eden for one month.
