AUCKLAND V. NAVY.

HOMESTERS IN SCORING MOOD

SPENCER REGISTERS HAT-TRICK.

There was the largest attendance of the season at Blandford Park yesterday afternoon when the Auckland reps, played a friendly contest with the Navy reps. The teams were:— Navy (white). —Redmond, Marr, Trace, Wilson, Luke, Wilkes, Arthur, Wright, Clarke, Page, Tite. Auckland (blue and white). —Batty, Gerrard, Reid, Morrison, Christie, Jones, Innes, Forrester, Spencer, Hislop, Kay, Referee. —Mr. :E. Parkinson. Prom the kick-off, Navy forced matters, and Batty had an anxious few The blue and whites, however, soon settled down and the first dangerous movement was started by Reid.dEe placed neatly to the left-wing for Hislop and Kay to get away. The former centred to Spencer, who brought Redmond to his knees to save. There were bright exchanges every * minute, both teams showing clever footwork and 'studied combination. There was nothing between the teams, and even when Spencer opened the scoring there was no marked superiority. The goal came from Innes, who got possession from a Navy throwin and transferred to centre. Spencer was on the qui ~vive, and promptly and cleverly netted. 'Immediately afterwards Auckland did earn the right ■to the lead by a beautifully combined frontal attack in which the ball travelled from right to left and back before .Forrester netted from a scrimmage in front of goal. Auckland 2, Navy 0. For a time the blue'and whites played enterprising f6otball, the' defence holding the Navy attack andv giving the home forwards great support. The third goal came to Auckland through a penalty scored by Spencer, and the fourth followed shortly afterwards as the result of a superb piece of, play by Kay, who centred to the toe-of Spencer. He took the ball with Wonderful accuracy to score a brilliant.goal. The change of ends found Auckland with "a convincing four goal lead. ■'- . '

The second spell was in striking contrast to'the first. Auckland eased up considerably in their methods, : and Navy's play seemed influenced by their four-goal deficit. Territorially, however, the whites had more than their fair share of the game, but all their efforts spent themselves against a resolute and capable Auckland defence. There was no further scoring, and Auckland retired rather easy winners in the end by four goals to nil.

..- REP TRIAL. POSSIBLES V. PKOBABLES. > Though not taken with the seriousness of a club encounter, there" was some pretty football in the rep. trial played as a curtain : :-raiser to the Auckland-Navy match. The Probables were a superior combination, Possibles being weakened by the inability of Kay to take his place at back, Hilliard, Y.M. goalie, filling the gap. Probables scored three goals in rapid succession from really clever, movements, Ansteed,,'Whimster and McLeay being the marksmen. Possibles were well held, this spell,, though they showed promising play in the outfield. The interval came with no change in the scoring.,- ~ . ._', The second spell was 'evenly contested, the Probables again proving too strong in defence for their opponents. Balloch took the score to four with a hard drive from close-in., AnsteedYadded a fifth, after which JDunsmore shone with-the best individual ,effort seen for some time. Getting the ball : from the recentre, he ran) through the: Probables' defence and passed t'6" Humphreys when' hard pressed. The latter returned to DunsTnote, who finished, ofs with a hard drive to the net. There was no further scoring; ■'•■■ * ■--.- '.-.-.
