OTAKI RACING CLUB.

THE WINTER MEETING.

TOURIST WINS CUP.

LAUGHING PEIXCE IN FORM,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

OTAKI, Tuesday.

Tlie opening of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's winter meeting was held to-day. The totalisator handled £19,789 10/, compared with £16,913 on the first day last year. Slipped the FieW. The Raukawa Cup saw Tourist lead all the way and by stealing a substantial margin in the middle stages he was able to set his opponents an impossible -task over the concluding stages. Admiral Drake missed the jump out and whipped in, where he was soon joined by Merry Damon, the leaders being Tourist from Full Mark, Cashier and Balloon with the field fairly well bunched. At the end of three furlongs Tourist stole away, and five furlongs from home he had a gap of five lengths on Full Mark, who was three lengths clear of Cashier and Balloon, the field by this time being strung out, Merry Damon and Admiral Drake still being* in the rear. Across the top Tourist's lead was three lengths from Full Mark, on whom Cashier and Balloon had closed, the bunch being headed by Miss Ransom. Merry Damon, Admiral Drake and Panther were then moving up fast. Tourist held his advantage in the straight and beat Panther by about a length. Merry Damon was a neck away, clear of Cashier, Admiral Drake and Full Mark. The winner pulled himself right away and sooner than fight with him Voitre let him run along. It won the race. Merry Damon put up a solid performance. He was giving the leader fully fifty yards' start over the last five furlongs and was forced out wide coming into line.. He should have won. Panther drifted in the third furlong from a handy position. Had he held it and made a similar run home he would have won. He finished solidly under punishment. None of the others was dangerous, but this is a long way from the true form of Admiral Drake.

Favourite Well Beaten. Merry Melody, who was favourite for the Otaki Hack Handicap, was well beaten a long way from home. Fallow made the running from Lucretia and Spearform. Merry Melody was handy to this trio till the half-mile, where he dropped back, and his place was taken by Best Friend. Fallow led into the etraight from Lucretia, Spearform and Best Friend, all well bunched. In a tight finish Lucretia beat Spearform by a head, with Fallow a neck away, third. Myola was fourth, followed by Best Friend and Bobbie's Mistake. Lucretia was nicely placed all the way, but only just won. A High-class Performance.

Class prevailed in the open sprint, when the favourite, Laughing Prince, just got up to head off Ridgemount. Ridgemount was first out, heing attended by To Atiawa, Staghunter, Melissa, Mandy and Equitant to the turn, with Laughing Prince at the head of the bunch. Ridgemount was still bowling along well in front entering the straight, but Laughing Prince was coming strongly, and under vigorous riding got up to beat Ridgemount by a very short head. Te Atiawa was a couple of lengths away third, with Melissa fourth. Then came Chopin and Equitant. The winner's performance was a high-class one, but he had a tough race. Ridgemount ran an excellent race and had every chance. Te Atiawa showed form, while Melissa, Mandy and Equitant failed to run on. Chopin ran a good race, for ho did not begin too well. Staghunter did not last long at the early pace.

Banbridge was favourite for the concluding event, but just failed to beat the well-backed Glenrossie, -with Paiko right up in a good finish. Potoaform rushed forward and piloted the field to the turn from Paiko, Glenrossie and Banbridge. Paiko led into the straight, where Glenrossie and Banbridge challenged. A keen struggle saw Glenrossie win by half a length, with Banbridge just second from Paiko.. Four or five lengths away came The Warden, followed by Audience and Potoaform. Banbridge was possibly a bit unlucky in getting a knock back soon after the start. Potoaform would have done better had he stayed in behind instead of going out in_ front with 10.7 up. " '
