ADVENTUROUS TOURS.
TWO YOUNG AUCKLANDERS.
SEEING THE WORLD.
TOP OF AUSTRALIA REACHED,
Two adventurous Aucklanders, Messrs. Hector McQuarrie and Richard Matthews, who motored from Sydney to the top of York Peninsula, the most northerly point in Australia, are at present in Auckland. They arrived by the Maunganui this morning and are now on the first stage of a "world tour in the car in which they made their previous trip.
Mr. McQuarrie explained this morning that they had decided when leaving New Zealand two years ago to go to Singapore to make their fortunes, but instead decided to traverse Australia "by caravan" to its most northerly point. After reaching Cairns they had to go through about 500 miles of bush, and despite the
predictions by some that it would take over six months to reach their destination, they reached it in three weeks, over country a car had never previously traversed.
"Wo had a most trying time," said Mr. McQuarrie. "Melon holes and devildevils were terrible, but we got through without mishap."
Afterwards the two New Zealanders went to Thursday Island and subsequently to New Guinea, it being their object to trade with the natives on the Fly River.» They both got sunstroke in that little-known land and were glad to get back again to Sydney. In their car, which has been christened "Emily," the two travellers are preparing to make a trip through New Zealand from furthest north to furthest south, and then leave on the next stage of their world tour.
