SIMPLER GEARS.

TREND OP BRITISH DESIGN. There are ample indications in the experience of the past year that British motor vehicle construction is far from having reached a final stage in its developments.- There have been many innovations of fundamental importance, which, though they are as yet the exception rather than the rule, are significant that the industry is still alive to the possibility of progress in the construction of motor vehicles for both private and commercial use. An example of this spirit is that one or two British firms now offer in standard productions what is termed a free-wheel device, which is of wide interest to motorists because it simplifies gear-changing to the extent of robbing the gear-box of most of its terrors, real or imaginary, even for the novice. Not only does it tend. towards economy in operation throughout the machine, but: also does not call for any disturbance of the orthodox lines of chassis manufacture —factors which both promise a good future for the device.
