RUGBY FOOTBALL.
REFEREES' MEETING. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. KOEERO LN JUBILEE YEAR. There were just on 40 members present at last night's "weekly meeting of the Auckland Rugby Referees' Association, with president M. Kronfeld in the chair. Messrs. E. Early (who has played half-back for Auckland) and E. Gasparich (a brother of referee J. G. Gasparich, the old Auckland rover) were elected members of the association, subject to passing the prescribed examinations. Major J. A. Cameron, manager of the New Zealand Army team, which won the King's Cup in the 1919 Interservices' tourney, was welcomed on his initial visit to the association's meetings. It was decided to ask the Auckland Rugby Union for permission to apply for the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Referees* Association in 1934 to be held in Auckland, that year being Auckland's Rugby jubilee. Considerable discussion ensued as the result of some problems submitted by Mr. J. A. Malcolm (the ex-Wellington and North Island full-back), arising from personal experiences as a player. Mr. C. W. Schnauer gave another splendid address, taking for his subject "Personality and Control in Refereeing. w Among qualifications required by a successful controller were perfect knowledge of the rules; quickness in making up his mind; he must be firm without being dictatorial (or, as Mr. Schnauer put in another way, "ability to demonstrate that he means business") ; a clear head and a knowledge of men; freedom from club or provincial bias. An interesting passage was the following: "The spirit of our game does not encourage deliberate evasion of the rules; and a referee should not go on the field expecting to meet any such evasion, though should it come under his notice he Bhould check it with the utmost severity." A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Schnauer for his fine lecture. The Promotions and Examinations Board reported that Mr. V. Cardon had passed his oral examination.
